Baby In Africa Born With 4 Legs
A Baby girl born with four legs in South Africa will have two of her limbs amputated.Doctors believe the surgery will enable the unnamed youngster, born near the northeastern town of Polokwane yesterday afternoon, to make a full recovery and live a normal life.
“Our medical specialists have observed her and believe that she can pull through,” provincial health department spokesman Phuti Seloba said today.
“The baby is responding very well and surgery will be carried out on her very soon.”
A local newspaper said a 23-year-old woman gave birth to the baby at the hospital in what doctors say is first of its kind at the institution.
No reason was given why this abnormality occurred. Almost exactly 4 years ago another baby was born in Zambia with almost the same problem except she had an extra hand and kidney.
At that time, the baby's deformities were said to be caused by the incomplete growth of another fetus and a multiplication of cells which would normally have resulted in the birth of Siamese twins.
