Parent Leave Baby On Train Station Platform By Mistake

Could you imagine realizing that both you and your husband have boarded a train and that you have left your child behind on the platform?

That is exactly what happened to a couple from New Jersey after they boarded a train in New Brunswick.

New Brunswick police say the parents were hauling several pieces of luggage, and each thought the other was carrying the child, when they boarded an NJ Transit train at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Instead, the infant, who is just 6 months old, was still in a stroller on the train platform.

Once the father realized the mistake, he took a cab back to the previous station to New Brunswick to retrieve the baby, who was unharmed.

I can't believe that the baby was okay when the father arrived....this couple is very lucky

Do You Send Personalized Christmas Cards?

Ever since our son arrived two years ago we have sent personalized Christmas cards.

I guess it's a fun way to make the card unique and also send a current photo of him at the same time.

As the cards came rolling in this year I noticed that a lot of our friends with young kids are doing the same thing.

One of my favorite things to do after the holiday season is to check out David Patrick Columbia's New York Social Diary's roundup of cards that have been sent to him over this holiday season.

Some are sent to them by collegues, others by celebrities and many from New York's Social "Upper Crust".

I love the matching sweaters, dresses and even matching kilts(not joking).

Check them out..

UPDATE: The Russian Quints Born In UK Doing Well

The set of quints that was born in the UK last month are doing so well that 2 of them are breathing independently.

Their parents Dimitri and Varvara Artamkin have just one wish for the New Year - for that the babies to be strong enough to leave their incubators and be held all at once.

Unfortunately that won't happen anytime soon due to the fact that the babies are being looked after by two different hospitals.

Just one day after the five girls were born two were whisked to London's Queen Charlotte hospital and then, on December 10, transferred to Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire because so much specialist equipment was needed to care for them.

Three remain at the John Radcliffe where they were born.

The couple rents an apartment in Oxford spends their days travelling between the two hospitals to check on their babies' progress.

The girls were born at 26 weeks gestation weighting between just 1lb 13oz and 2lb 2oz. Despite doctors' predictions that they could not all survive, the girls have continued to surprise everyone with their fighting spirit.

During Varvara's pregnancy, the couple had a hard time finding a doctor that would care for her during her pregnancy. Most refused saying they believed the risks were too high.

Eventually, they found one who wanted to help, but he warned them that in order to give their children the best possible chance, they should leave Russia, to seek better care elsewhere.

Dimitri says: "He told us that in his opinion the best place for looking after premature babies was Britain, and he gave us the name of the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford.

"We had a friend in Oxford at the time, so we sent her some papers explaining our situation and asked her to pass them on to Dr Lawrence Impey, the top consultant at the hospital.

"She spoke to him and he agreed that if we travelled to Oxford, he would treat us. He said that although he would have given us the same facts and figures about selective terminations, he would have left it to us to make the choice."

A wealthy friend of the family offered to pay all of the medical bills, ensuring that the quints have not placed burden on the NHS.

"He said, 'Just don't worry about money,'" says Dimitri. "He is a very kind and generous man and he wanted to help us. He has paid for everything, from our medical care to our living expenses here. Without him, we could not have come here."

Two Officers Help Deliver and Save The Life Of A 2lb Baby

Yesterday morning, police in Wyandanch, NY received a report of a miscarriage.

When they arrived they found a pregnant Patrice Green, 21, in heavy labor on her bedroom floor, just minutes from giving birth.

The officers kept telling her not to push, but they baby was clearly not listening because just moments after paramedics arrived so did the tiny newborn.

After an EMS worker cut the umbilical cord, the officers wrapped the underweight, premature baby in a blanket and rushed in their cruiser toward Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, radioing ahead for roadblocks to speed their way.

The baby boy, born two months early and just more than 2 pounds, was still and quiet. But as one of the officers blew oxygen with a tube near his face, a wail filled the squad car.

Today both, mom and baby are in stable condition thanks to the quick thinking of these officers.

UK Hospital Electronically Tags Newborn Babies

A maternity unit in Shropshire has found a way to monitor their babies 24-hours a day by introducing an electronic tagging system for newborns.

The system was created to give parents piece of mind.

If a baby is moved from any of the unit's "safe areas" then an alarm is sounded and the name and location of the baby appears on a computer screen.

"This is all about extending the security we can offer parents and newborn babies at the hospital," said Jan Latham, senior midwife at the hospital.

"We already have stringent security procedures in place, but this is a fantastic new addition and something that will bring greater peace of mind to both parents and staff."

Charlie Owen(pictured here),was the first baby to be tagged with the new security system. He was born to parents Debbie Grey and Tony Owen from Shrewsbury.

What The Heck is A Bed Bug?

Last summer, a city close to us had an outbreak of bedbugs. I was stressed out because my husband is such a neat freak, having bed bugs would freak him out.

I decided to read up on them more and was surprised to hear that these unwanted creatures are more problematic that I thought.

Here are some scary bed bug facts:

  • They are little bugs that are nocturnal(up at night) and feed off human blood
  • They usually live inside of mattresses, where they have convenient access to a food source - you
  • They crawl out just before dawn and bite you, sucking out blood for about five minutes.
  • You don't feel anything until after the bed bug is already safely back in its home.
  • They can infest all kinds of different places. but most often they chose the mattress - in the seams, the box springs, or sometimes the linens.
How do they you get them?

Sometimes people who travel abroad will find themselves with bed bugs because they will often crawl into your luggage and get carried back into your home. If you buy used clothes or used furniture, sometimes there can be bed bugs in them (they don't just live in beds, but anywhere near where people sleep). Buying something used and bringing it into your house, could be where you picked up your own set of bugs.

If you need more information please visit bedbugs

23 Weeker Beats The Odds To be Home For Christmas

This holiday season is filled with many micro-preemies that have fought their way through the NICU in order to be home with their families this Christmas.

One baby caught my attention so I thought I would share his exciting beginning.

Samuel Hugh Westcott was born at 23 weeks gestation weighing a meager 500 grams (just an ounce over a pound).

After arriving via cesarean because he was sitting breach, Samuel surprised everyone by crying after he was born, which is VERY unusual for a baby who's lung have yet to fully develop.

Because of the dire situation, the hospital gave the baby's parents, Jeff and Kelley Westcott, a book of statistics and research outlining all the things that could go wrong, but they threw it in the garbage.

Over the next 5 months, Samuel was on a ventilator for 10 weeks and was forced to fend off a serious blood, lung infection and Nectrotising Enterocolitis (NEC), a deadly condition where the gasses from digestion break through into the lining of the bowel.

Like many parents in this situation, Samuel's mum couldn't even bring herself to register her son's birth until he was six-weeks-old.

"I was not sure whether he would live and I did not want to do anything that would jeopardise or jinx it," Mrs Westcott said.

"I let my guard down after ten-weeks and I thought we were getting closer to the door and then he became sick."

Now that the little man is home he still needs medical assistance and is tube fed every 3 hours.

His development will be watched closely so that delays can be picked up on quickly.

I am sure that this family is just happy to have Samuel home and that the many appointments he has are just a reminder of how lucky they are that he survived his early arrival.

UK Couple Experiences Baby Joy After 8 Miscarriages

After 15 years of heartbreak and eight miscarriages, Sarah Whitman and her husband Martin have finally experienced baby joy.

Once she has miscarried 4 times, Sarah was diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome, where the body's immune system thinks that the fetus is a foreign body and tries to expel it. Blood clots build up in the placenta and cause a miscarriage.

Her doctor gave her medication to thin the blood in her placenta, but it wasn't enough to keep her pregnant. Over the next few years the couple lost another four babies.

The couple discussed adoption, but while on holiday in May 2006 decided to have one last try.

"We came home and I felt different," Sarah remembers, "I knew I was pregnant, but this time instinctively everything just felt right."

Everything was going well until the 22nd week, when complications threatened to bring on an early labour. To prevent this, she had to stop her medication - at the risk of starving the baby of nutrients.

Their daughter, Maya, was born earlier this year, at 38 weeks gestation weighing a healthy 7lb 1oz.

I am sure this couple has many things to be grateful for this holiday season, with baby Maya being tops on that list.

New Jersey To Test Moms and Babies For HIV

Last month Minnesota got mixed reviews over their newborn screening that would test infants for 54 treatable diseases.

Now New Jersey are hoping make HIV testing routine for moms during their prenatal care and required for some newborns.

Once signed, this bill will put the state in the forefront of the national fight against HIV transmission to babies.

“We can significantly reduce the number of infections to newborns and help break down the stigma associated with the disease. For newborns, early detection can be the ultimate lifesaving measure.” Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey

New Jersey law now requires providers only to offer HIV testing to pregnant women. Under the new law, HIV testing would be part of routine prenatal care for all pregnant women, and doctors would provide pregnant woman with information about HIV and AIDS. It also would require newborns to be tested when the mother has tested positive or her HIV status is unknown.

Dr. Phil Supports Lynn Spears

I have to admit that I think that the media has been really hard on Lynn Spears this week after OK Magazine revealed that her youngest daughter, Jamie Lynn, 16, was 12 weeks pregnant with her first child.

Being the stand up guy that he is, Dr. Phil has spoken out about his respect for Lynn and her dedication to being a good mom.

He was quoted as saying that:

his friend is "troubled right now" but is "really looking for the positives in this." As her daughters live under the glare of public scrutiny and criticism, Lynne has "her feet squarely and solidly on the ground."

His wife Robin goes on to say that:

"They're a very strong, close-knit family. They're relying on each other." And with her book recently put on hold, Lynne is also drawing strength from her faith. "I talked to Lynne yesterday and she said they're turning to prayer, asked that I pray for them. That's how they're going to get through it."
This situation could happen to any parent out there. It just isn't possible to be with your kids 24 hours a day.

If they are going to have sex they will, whether you are in the next room or never home. You just hope that at that point they remember all of the things you taught them about being safe and protecting themselves.

Jamie Lynn and her boyfriend more than likely thought that this couldn't happen to them and they were wrong.

I just hope that other teens her age have learned from this situation

Study: Following A Fertility Diet Increases Your Chances Of Conceiving

A study done at the Harvard School of Public Health find that women trying to get pregnant could boost their chances by adopting a "fertility diet" high in nuts and avocados while cutting down on coffee and alcohol.

Researchers found the majority of cases of infertility due to ovulation disorders in otherwise healthy women could be prevented through diet and lifestyle changes.

"The dietary and lifestyle choices women make as they try to get pregnant can impact profoundly their fertility," Dr. Jorge E. Chavarro, who worked on the study, told Reuters Health.

The combination of five or more low-risk lifestyle factors, including weight control, physical activity and diet, was associated with a 69-percent lower risk of ovulation-related infertility.

The researchers also found, consistent with earlier reports, that increased body weight raises the risk of infertility due to ovulation disorders.

"Women trying to become pregnant could consider following these lifestyle practices because they are consistent with an overall healthy lifestyle and may also help them become pregnant," the researchers said.

Baby Jesus Gets GPS

Due to a high amount of thefts, many churches, organizations and families are getting creative in their ways to keep their nativity scenes intact.

In Bal Harbour Florida the Baby Jesus will be equipped with a GPS device after a previous baby statue went missing, even though it had been bolted down.

Mary and Joseph will also be fitted with GPS devices and a four-foot high a plexiglass screen has also been installed in front of the display according to Dina Cellini, who oversees the whole scene.

"I don't anticipate this will ever happen again," Cellini said, "but we may need to rely on technology to save our savior."

Surprise! Egyptian Mom Delivers Six Babies After Only Expecting ONE

Wholly Christmas surprise!! A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to sextuplets this morning after she was admitted to hospital at 32 weeks gestation.

The two boys and four girls arrived via Caesarean section at the Asiut Educational Hospital, south of Cairo. The procedure lasted two hours.

After examining her, doctors informed Zeinab Mansour she was carrying six babies and not one as she and her supervising doctor had believed.

The couple had been trying to conceive for a few years and She was on medication to stimulate her ovulation cycle when she became pregnant.

The new dad , a young lawyer, said he and his wife are delighted. "But we will not have any more babies; this one time is enough."

Could you imagine thinking you were having one and getting six??? I see a diaper drive in this family's future.

Ferrill Quintuplets Celebrate First Birthday

The five babies that star in TLC's show Quint- essential celebrate their first birthday today!

The four part special that covered parents, Pete and Jenny's pregnancy, the delivery and homecoming has wrapped up with a look at how the family is doing now that the babies have been home for 10 months.

As the couple gets ready for Christmas, they also prepare to celebrate getting through the first year with five special babies in their lives.

The special updates us on the progress of each baby and how Pete and Jenny are doing after their first year. All of the babies have changed so much since their arrival, growing in leaps and bounds!

Drayden Karter was born at 3.35lbs, came home at 6.8lbs and now weighs 20lbs!! Jenny describes him as the sensitive one, it concerns him when one of the other babies are crying. She also says that he is independent smiling at her when she is holding one of his brothers or sisters.

Layne Mykel was born at 3.24lbs, came home at just under 6lbs and now weighs over 20lbs. Layne has been diagnosed with having some sight issues. He now wears glasses, which is fairly common for babies that are born very early. He is standing and loves to interact with everyone and everything.

Kieran Skye was born at 3.25 lbs, and now weighs 18lbs. Jenny calls her a little diva and she was the first to come home. Her mom has successfully taught her to be able to sign when she wants milk.

Landyn Konner was born the smallest at 2.5lbs, came home weighing 5.5lbs and now weighs 17lbs. He is a bouncer that can now crawl. Jenny calls him a wild one probably due to the high amount of energy he has.

Irelyn Kadyn was born the heaviest at 3.4lbs, but lost the most weight due to illness. Not long after arriving home she was diagnosed with extra blood flow through her lung, which would lead to congestive heart failure. Surgery needed to be done and now today she weighs a whopping 18lbs. After her surgery she regained her energy and started to show her personality. She is now crawling and standing.

First year quint stats - Collectively they have grown 80lbs and 5ft since birth, have drunken 9,600 bottles and used 18,200 diapers.

One year after delivering her five babies Jenny looks fabulous!! Since her peak she has lost more than 59lbs. She says on more than one occasion that her weight loss is due to keeping up with 5 active babies, but throws in that she might forget to eat every once in a while...

She is currently in school to get her Masters Degree in Social Work. Like a true mom, she uses her diaper bag as her bookbag. It carries her one book for class perfectly.

Pete is a Social worker for families in difficulty. One year later, he is actively looking for a bigger house to allow the family to have more room. The equipment that is needed to keep 5 babies happy appears to take over every corner of the house.

We hope that TLC continues to update the world on this wonderful family. Pete and Jenny really are great parents. There is something about their energy that makes you want to see them do well.

Hopefully the years to come will be as good to them as their last year has been.

Couple Tries To Sell Baby For $30

A horrible couple in Florida have been charged with child neglect after they offered their baby to shoppers in the parking lot outside of Pet Smart.

Police say a mother wasn't here to buy, she was here to sell. Witnesses tell us the mother was holding her infant, looking for anyone willing to pay the asking price of 30 bucks.

The back of their SUV had stickers on it, with one reading "The Reason for the Season" along with a picture of Baby Jesus.

This poor kid is going to grow up knowing that its parents practically tried to give him/her away. Some people just don't get it. Babies are an amazing gift and a lot of hard work. There are places to bring a baby when you can no longer look after them. The parking lot of a busy shopping mall is not one of them.

Christina Aguilera Rumoured To Have a Scheduled C-Section

The Daily Mail is reporting that Christina Aguilera is "Too Posh To Push" and that she has scheduled her C-section for January 10th.

We have covered this issue many times and hope that Christina understands the risks that are involved with scheduling your delivery.

Two things that make a natural birth critical are: hormones are triggered allowing proper development, and the babys face (mucus membranes) are innocculated with the moms flora as it slides past on the way out. This transfers the moms immunity info to the baby.

Let's hope that this rumor is not true and that Christina is as tough as we think she is...

Top 10 Christmas Favourite Movies

It is officially Christmas movie season and I am loving the classics this year. I watched Rudolph the other night in awe of how old it was. I love the way the characters waddle from spot to spot.

The amazing part is that even though some of these movies are well over 30 years old, they are more popular as the ones that were created recently.

I listed my personal top 10 below in no particular order. Is your favorite on the list?

  1. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
  2. A Christmas Story (1983)
  3. Frosty the Snowman (1969)
  4. 'Twas The Night Before Christmas (1974 show)
  5. "Polar Express" (2004)
  6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000 movie)
  7. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" (1970)
  8. "Home Alone 2" (1992)
  9. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989)
  10. "Elf" (2003)

Edward and Sophie Show Off Their New Baby

New parents Edward and Sophie show off "the best Christmas present ever" - their newborn son.

The little boy made his first public appearance outside the hospital where he made a surprise appearance on Monday.

No name has been settled on yet, but the couple is said to be "narrowing down a few favourites". Bets are on - 8-1 for Archie, followed by Charlie.

The couple's spokesman said: "They are very much looking forward to taking the baby home in time for Christmas.

"He is the best Christmas present ever. Sophie is very, very, very happy - she has a big smile on her face and is very bubbly. Edward hasn't stopped grinning since his son was born."

The Queen has yet to meet the baby.
A senior courtier said: "She is thrilled - she is going around telling people the news. She cannot wait to meet him."

Isabellla's Adorable Pout

Isabella Damon, 18-month-old daughter of Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso, showed her adorable pout at LAX airport yesterday.

Earlier this week, People.com reported that Matt was seen helping daughter Isabella pet the animals at the Molly's Mutts & Meows and Best Friends Animal Society adoption booth at a West Hollywood park. The family didn't adopt an animal, but Isabella appeared to enjoy playing with the dogs, a park goer tells us.

Health Canada Says Home Lead Test Kits Are Unreliable

With the increase in lead hazard recalls this year, many parents are turning to home test kits to determine whether or not their children's toys are safe.

At the end of October the CPSC released a statement that:

"Many of the tests performed using the kits did not detect lead when it was there (false negatives); some indicated lead was present when it was not (false positives). Of 104 total test results, more than half (56) were false negatives, and two were false positives. None of the kits consistently detected lead in products if the lead was covered with a non-leaded coating. Based on the study consumers should not use lead test kits to evaluate consumer products for potential lead hazards."

Yesterday, Health Canada issued a warning claiming the same thing.

Health Canada's product safety laboratory evaluated a number of the kits, which typically are swab-based systems that tests for lead using a chemical that reacts with lead, changing colour if lead is present.

The home tests have been available for some time from specialty shops, but have more recently been available on the Internet and in hardware and general merchandise stores, where they sell for between about $8 and $19.

Tests done by Health Canada showed results may be affected by pigment in the product being tested.

Unfortunately, neither association released the names of the tests they believed to be inaccurate. I guess it is safe to say that purchasing any of these tests would not be a good idea.

Uk And Scotlands Most Popular Names For 2007

Last week we listed Canada's most popular names for 2007. The Daily Mail has posted the UK's most popular names for 07 (pictured right) and BBC has posted Scotland's most popular names for 07 (pictured below).

It is interesting to see that names that are very popular in one country don't even make the list in another.

Sophie(or Sophia) appears to be popular in all countries. It tops Canada's list and Scotlands list, and gets to number 6 in the UK.

In the UK, their multicultural community shows it's strength by vaulting Mohammed into the second spot. It also appears a few times on the list with 7 different spellings.

Spice Babies Join Their Moms On Stage

The Spice Girls brought their children on stage last night during their hit song Mama.

Victoria Beckham outfitted her sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz in black t-shirts with POSH emblazoned across the front for their time on stage.

The only baby missing from the reunion was Geri's baby Bluebell.

The good part is that all six children were equipped with either earplugs or infant sized headphones to protect their young ears from the noise levels on stage.

Jamie Lynn Spears Expecting First Child

OK Magazine has announced that Britney Spears sister is expecting her first baby.

Sarah Ivens: Editor-in-Chief, OK! Magazine said in a statement today that:

"Jamie Lynn Spears is ready to reveal that she is expecting a baby, and OK! Magazine sat down with her and her mom, Lynne to get the exclusive this week. Although surprised and scared, Jamie Lynn tells OK! that shes excited to become a mom."

Jaime Lynn is believed to be 12 weeks along. She initially kept the news to herself when she learned of the pregnancy from an at-home test .

After she found out from a doctor that she was pregnant, she said, "I took two weeks to myself where I didn't tell anybody."

"Only one of my friends knew because I needed to work out what I would do for myself before I let anyone's opinion affect my decision. Then I told my parents and my friends. I was scared, but I had to do what was right for me," she said.

Spears broke the news to her mother, Lynne, just before Thanksgiving, the magazine reported.

"She was very upset because it wasn't what she expected at all," Spears said. "A week after, she had time to cope with it and became very supportive."

Nickelodeon, the network that produces Jaime Lynn's show, Zoey 101, issues this statement saying:

"We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being."
