Wilkinson Quints Celebrate 1st Birthday

It has been a year since Rachelle and Jayson Wilkinson welcomed their 5 bundles of joy into the world and plenty of people want to say 'Happy Birthday.'

“We have about 190 people that RSVP’d that they wanted to come,” said Rachelle Wilkinson, mother of the quints. “We wanted to invite everybody that's helped us out this past year.”

During the past 12 months, dozens of friends and neighbors have volunteered their time, watching the five babies grow.

Rustin is still the fiery red head -- he's the first to walk. Sister Kassidy is also up on her feet. Kaydence is still a mama's girl. Ryder is Mr. Sociable, and Kendall is pretty in pink.

“I just really thought there was no way I was going to be able to do it, but really this first year has been a lot easier than I thought it was going to be,” said Wilkinson.

As many as 20 volunteers continue to help out mom Rachelle. Her family's in town for the party and they're taking on Thursday's shifts.

“They drink four bottles a day -- each still -- so that's 20 bottles a day. I'd say we go through about 30 diapers a day,” said Wilkinson.

And that's why the Wilkinson's have invited so many people to their home. They want this birthday party to be a thank you party.

At birth the quints toppled the scales at a combined weight of 21 lbs 7.2 ounces.
Name Sex Weight Time
Kassidy F 5 lbs., 1.2 oz. 8:17 a.m.
Kaydence F 3 lbs., 6 oz. 8:18 a.m.
Rustin M 4 lbs., 15 oz. 8:18 a.m.
Kyndall F 4 lbs., 2 oz. 8:19 a.m.
Ryder M 3 lbs., 15 oz. 8:19 a.m.

During the last year the family has kept their blog current with fun competition videos and updates.

A post worth reading is Rachelle's full account of the day the babies were born. She includes family pictures and an in depth play by play about how the who delivery happened.

Pirate's Cog Bedroom

German toy company Haba never lets me down when I am looking for something unique and exciting. They are well known for their cool kids toys and fun kids spaces.

Because we are currently in the market for a bedroom set for our son, I have been looking everywhere for something different.

I was pretty excited when I found this set, until I realized that my three-year-old wouldn't get any sleep with this cool Pirate's ship attached to his wall.

Pregnant Teacher Loses Her Job

A federal judge in New York has ruled that a Seventh-Day Adventist school has the right to fire a teacher who became pregnant out of wedlock.

U.S. District Judge Dora Irizarry in Brooklyn found that the teacher, Jewel Redhead, was more like a member of the clergy than a teacher, the New York Post reported. Irizarry, who issued her ruling Monday, said that Redhead was supposed to bring religion into all subjects she taught at a religious school in Queens..

Under the First Amendment, religious groups can set their own standards for clergy and do not have to obey non-discrimination laws that interfere with their beliefs.

The teacher said that she plans to appeal the ruling.

"I'm more adamant in my stance that the church was wrong in the way they treated me," Redhead said.

While it's ideal to have two parents who are married and committed to one another raising a family together, many families do just as well even though mom and dad aren't married.

For all we know, this teacher could be in a relationship with someone that she has been with for years....

More of The McConaughey Family In OK Magazine

New parent Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves show off their beautiful baby in OK Magazine.

The couple shared personal photos taken just minutes after he was born and talked about how their lives have changed now that he is here.

In true Matthew McConaughey style, the interview is candid and honest. He doesn't beat around the bush and I love it.

One of my favorite parts is when the interviewer asks what the star's first words were to his son. Here is his response:

I had him for the first 15 minutes because they had to take care of Camila. I said, "Come here little man." I saw the pecker and thought we'd been right all along about him being a boy. Then I brought him over to her.

Pregnant Prostitution Ring Busted in Missouri

Well this story just goes to show that pregnant women are very resourceful...

Two women were arrested during a sting operation at a Lake Ozark hotel last week and charged with prostitution.

Two other women were also arrested, and three of the women are pregnant. Alexandra Wells and Allysia Waldrop were both charged on Thursday. Waldrop is pregnant, but is not known if Wells is also.

The undercover bust went down at a Lake Ozark area hotel after the sheriff's department received several reports that pregnant women were advertising prostitution on an internet advertising site.

One of the women arrested was eight months pregnant, another six months pregnant, and another was three months pregnant. They ranged in age from 18 to 22 years old.

The only thing I can't figure out is if they were the ones being prostituted or if they were just collecting the money...

Blueberry's Minky Pocket Diapers Please Mommy and Baby!

Our family was recently introduced to Blueberry's Minky Pocket cloth diapers and I have to say - I'm Impressed!

Because I have been using cloth diapers for 2 years now, it takes a lot to impress me.

Blueberry has done a few things that make their diaper stand out.

The first thing that struck me was the modern, fashionable prints that are not just soft, but functional. When my diapers arrived I had to double check for myself that they didn't need to be covered. It is hard to believe that a diaper this cute protects against leaks - but it does!

Practical parents who don't want to have to buy a new stack of diaper every time their child hits a growth spurt will like Blueberry's Minky Pocket Diapers because they are adjustable as your child grows.

The snaps on the front can be adjusted up or down to fit a small, medium or large child.

I liked how easy they washed up. In order for them to be the most absorbent, they will need to be washed five or six times, which is standard for any cloth diaper.

Some nice features:

  • snaps and Velcro match colour scheme of the diaper
  • available in 20 different patterns
  • the insert is made of microfiber and hemp

Same Sex Couple Welcomes Quads Or Twins By Each Mom

Same sex couple, Karen Wesolowski and Martha Padgett wanted a baby so badly that each one underwent IVF treatment, having two embryos implanted.

Exhausted after trying to get pregnant for 3 years, Martha suggested that they should both have eggs implanted.

In order for it all to work, both had to take medication to make sure they were on the same cycle.

After trying 5 times to pregnant(at $15,000 per try), the ladies were shocked to find out that this time they were BOTH expecting.

Even though they knew that 2 embryos had been implanted, they didn't ever believe that they would end up with 4 babies.

During the three month ultrasound the women discovered Martha was expecting twins - and a month later they were shocked to find Karen was too.

Martha, 38, gave birth first to babies Sophia and Alex, and Karen gave birth 22 hours later to their siblings Andrew and Sienna.

They didn't expect they would give birth on the same date - let alone 22 hours apart at different hospitals.

One of Karen's babies, Andrew, suffered breathing problems and had to stay in hospital for several weeks, but her daughter Sienna was fine and healthy.

'It was tough having to have one baby home at a time,' she said.

'But eventually we had them all together again.'

'We both breastfed,' said Martha. 'So, when one baby woke up one of us would get up and feed them, and then when another woke the other would feed.

'It's been really hard with four babies. But we're so thrilled, knowing they're all related and can help each other through life.'

Karen added: 'Now we have four babies who are all brothers and sisters. Our family is complete.'

A Modern Twist On A Classic Bunk Bed

We are currently looking for a new bed for our son and a bunk bed is on our list. I came across this set today and wondered if it was practical for the average child.

I like that it has a larger bed on bottom and that it has an unusual shape, which can add some flair to a boring room.

I don't, however, like that the stairs don't lead to an open area for the kids to get into bed. It seems like an accident waiting to happen.

The Wave 2 Bed is designed by Gudiksen Design an innovative design studio specialising in high functional quality furniture inspired by the Scandinavian light and environment.

Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O'Connell Expecting Twins!

US Magazine is reporting that Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O'Connell will soon be on double diaper duty.

A spokesman for the couple confirmed that Rebecca, 35, and Jerry, 34, are expecting twins this winter.

The babies will be the first children for the pair.

Jerry and Rebecca met at a party in 2004; he proposed a year later. They got married in an intimate ceremony in Los Angeles in July 2007.

A source close to the actor tells Us, "Jerry couldn’t be happier about becoming a dad.”

Earlier this month, O'Connell told the magazine that they had been trying to have kids.

"It would be amazing if it happened," he said at the Much Love Animal Rescue's "Bow Wow WOW!" event in L.A. July 19. "I hope it does happen."

He joked that the conception process had been "a lot fun for me," adding that they go at it "at least a few days a month!"

Wow! How exciting. Hollywood definitely has the twin market covered!

Twin Sisters Give Birth to Triplets

For five of the six years Darla and Mark Pritchard have been married, they've been trying to start a family.

Two attempts at in-vitro fertilization had failed, and they were about to make a third try when Darla's twin sister, Dana Johnson, offered to be a surrogate, to up the odds of success.

Darla and Mark took her up on the offer.

In a twist of fate, both women, 39, got pregnant when eggs fertilized by Mark were implanted.
On Feb. 27, Darla gave birth to twins, Mallory and Wesley and, six weeks later, Dana had a girl, Mattie.
The babies are considered triplets and biological siblings. All three will be raised by Darla and Mark.

"They're from the same batch of eggs, same batch of sperm, and so they are considered triplets -- they just have different birthdays," Darla said

I guess the old saying is true...When it rains - it pours!!

Soleil Moon Frye in Baby Couture

Soleil Moon Frye Talks Pregnancy, Motherhood and Organics in this months Baby Couture magazine.

The hands-on mom to two beautiful girls splits her time between motherhood and the eco-friendly boutique she co-owns in Los Angeles called, “The Little Seed.”

Here are some highlights of the interview:

On Demi being her birthcoach for both pregnancies:

She is one of the most incredible birthing coaches in the universe. She has a real gift. She is one of the people you want holding your hand when you’re bringing a baby into the world, and I’ve been blessed with an incredible group of family and friends both times.
On the difference between her two pregnancies:

Both were incredible. During my pregnancy with Poet, I was reading every step of the way—”What To Expect When You’re Expecting,” and other pregnancy books—I had music on my belly, and I think I called my doctor every single day. Ha ha! With Jagger, I was so busy running after Poet and opening the store, that I started having contractions two months before my due date.
Why she started Little Seed:
When I had Poet, and my partner Paige [Tolmach] had her son Jackson, it felt like our eyes were opened to the world for the first time. When you have kids, your perspective changes so much. We both had so many questions about parenthood, and what was healthy for our children. We spent hundreds of hours searching for organic alternatives that were safe and non-toxic, and we realized there wasn’t really a safe haven for families to go to. We knew that if we were feeling this way, there must be millions of other people feeling the same way, so we created ”The Little Seed.”

Canadian Mom Welcomes 18th Baby

Livia Ionce, a Romanian immigrant living in British Columbia, has given birth to her 18th child, making her the province's most prolific mother in 20 years.

The new baby, a girl named Abigail, weighed in at seven pounds, 12 ounces (3.5 kilograms).

"We never planned how many children to have. We just let God guide our lives, you know, because we strongly believe life comes from God and that's the reason we did not stop the life," said Alexandru Ionce, the proud dad.

The couple immigrated to Canada from Romania in 1990 and now lives in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Their 17 other children range in age from 20 months to 23 years old.

Ionce said he did not know if the couple would have more children. The family now has 10 girls and eight boys.

"We would have liked a boy to be even," he said. "We thank God all of them are healthy and happy."

New Research May Show That Cellphones Are Dangerous To Children Under 10

If your child has a cellphone then you may want to take note of this new warning.

A prominent cancer specialist in the United States is cautioning parents to limit the use of cellphones by kids to emergencies because he claims the electromagnetic energy the mobile emits likely penetrates the brain of a child more deeply than that of an adult.

That claim follows on the heels of a similar warning recently issued by Canadian experts that suggests children under 10 use land lines as much as possible and limit their chatting on mobiles to short and infrequent calls.

Dr. Ronald B. Herberman of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, along with a team of international experts, has posted a report on the university's website urging people to take precautions in the use of cellphones.

"The developing organs of a fetus or child are the most likely to be sensitive to any possible effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields," said Herberman in one of the report's recommendations.

"Do not allow children to use a cellphone except for emergencies."

The problem is that living tissue is vulnerable to electromagnetic fields within the frequency bands used by cellphones. He argues kids have a higher absorption rate because their brains are still developing.

Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson Share Ruby's Christening

Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson share their daughter's christening with family and OK Magazine.

The event, which was low key, was attended by just 20 friends and family.

During an interview, that took place before the christening, the couple spoke about expecting baby #2, pregnancy cravings and Ruby.

Here are some highlights:

To Gavin: Were you shocked to find out baby #2 way on the way?

A little bit. We didn't plan for it to happen, but I am really glad it did. We like being young parents, so if we're planning on having quite a few then we needed to be started!
Pregnancy Cravings?

Actually just nice fresh salads, which is better than lasagna which is what I craved last time! Lasagna and spaghetti bolognaise.

Now that Ruby is Nine Months old, how is she doing?

She is such a good baby - she sleep from 8pm to 8am. She's and angel. I think that's why we've had another so quickly.

How do you think that you'll cope with two really young children?

C - All we can hope for is we have another one like Ruby. G - When Charlotte was pregnant with Ruby, everyone was say your life's going t0 change, it's going to be hard, but it's been Brilliant. Now they're saying: "Two under the age of two - it's going to be even harder." I guess we'll have to see.

Identical Twins Marry, Give Birth To Identical Twins

When identical twin sisters Diane and Darlene Nettemeier met identical twin brothers Craig and Mark Sanders a decade ago, they could never have guessed just how much of their lives would be based around perfect sets of two.

Not only did the two identical sets of twins get married at the same time(officially "quarternary marriages"), they built a pair of homes, side by side.

Soon afterwards, despite a million-to-one odds, Diane and Craig went on to have identical twins of their own - Colby and Brady, now seven.

The amazing part about all this is that identical twins don't run in the family, they are completely spontaneous. So, for a and identical twin couple to have identical twins is just a ridiculous set of odds, not genetics.

RECALL: Kids II Infant Rattles Due to Choking Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Kids II Inc, today announced the voluntary recall of about 19,000 Bright Starts Ring Rattles because the tip of the rattle’s antenna, which is attached to a bee figure, can detach and pose a choking hazard to small children.

Kids II has received two reports of the tip of the antenna detaching from the rattle, including one report that the purple ball from the tip of the antenna was in the baby’s mouth. No injuries have been reported.

The soft toy rattle is a bee with a yellow head, ring-shaped green body, blue/green wings and purple/red antennas. Model number 8534 and date code PA8 are printed on a sewn-in label on the bee’s head.

Consumers should immediately take the recalled rattles away from small children and contact Kids II toll-free at (877) 325-7056 (8 - 5 M-F) or visit the firm’s Web site at www.kidsii.com to receive a free replacement rattle.

Swedish Company Pulls 'Baby Bikini' Over Protests

Swedish clothing company Ellos has pulled two-piece bikinis designed for baby girls as young as 2 months old and apologized for the products after widespread protests.

The bikinis were pulled from stores after children's and women's groups complained that the revealing swimwear contributed to the sexualization of the bodies of small children, Swedish news agency TT reported Thursday.

Ellos representative Per-Olf Gustafsson said,

"Ellos is a family company. We do not want anyone taking offense from our assortment. We have erred in this case and we will do our best to ensure that there is no repeat."

Why would someone want to put a bikini on their baby? A newborn's skin is so delicate, it should be completely covered when they are in the sun - especially babies who are not old enough to wear sunscreen.

Move Over Gosselins! The Harris Sextuplets To Be Profiled on Discovery Health

Discovery Health is set to introduce the world to another set of amazing sextuplets. In their three-part special Then Came 6, the network tells the story of the Harrises, an extraordinary family with a remarkable claim-to-fame-they have the only surviving set of African-American sextuplets.

In February 2008, Discovery Health first introduced viewers to the Harris family, showcasing the ups and downs of raising sextuplets -- plus one. Now, this next installment of THEN CAME 6 provides a deeper look at the Harris’ daily life, following the family as the sextuplets grow, and as their list of extracurricular activities and social circle expands. Caring for six-year-old sextuplets and a pre-teen offers no rest for Diamond and Chris -- day after day, their hectic schedule of planning family meals, carpooling, cleaning, checking homework and playing with the kids offers little, if any, downtime.

THEN CAME 6 also shows how this unique family navigates everyday issues that affect many families, including raising an autistic child. This hour-long special demonstrates how the Harris’ handle life’s challenges and changes with incredible poise and their signature sense of humor.

The sextuplets — four boys and two girls — arrived at 26 1/2 weeks gestation weighing between 1 pound, 3 ounces and 1 pound, 12 ounces on July 7th 2002.

Premiering Tuesday, August 5 at 9 PM ET/PT, Then Came 6 offers a glimpse into the chaos -- and the fun! -- that comes with raising seven children.

Would Your Prefer A Manny Or A Nanny?

Every mom dreams of having someone who can take their kids off their hands for a few hours, while some people actually have the luxury of having this person live with them full time and its not their husband.

While watching the new reality show 'Hampton Nannies' the other night, I realized that it isn't just women being hired to look after the kids. Hampton Nannies also features a male nanny, who was very popular with the kids and the moms!

This got me to wondering - are male nannies more in demand than their female counterparts?

I really hadn't thought of having a 'manny' until last year when a friend of mine who is a busy NYC mommy told me that she had one and her 3 boys loved him.

At that time, it made sense to me that she had a guy watching her 3 boys because he could get rough and tumble with them, just like young boys like.

But would the same situation work if you had 3 girls? Probably not.

According to an article I read last year, 90% of nannies in the U.S. were female, leaving just a meager 10% male. Does that make them more expensive?

Here are a few pro's and con's for having a female vs male nanny.

  • Many be more sensitive to both sexes and their childhood issues
  • Can create balance in a family where there is no mom
  • Females normally have more experience looking after children from childhood babysitting jobs and younger siblings
  • More domestic - It's sad to say but women normally look after the inside while the men are better at the outdoor duties

  • May not as strong or physically able to do the tougher kid stuff
  • Unable to relate to male issues

  • Can create balance in a family where there is no dad
  • men are stronger, faster and more willing to play rough with boys and girls
  • men are known as protectors, and it might make you feel better to know that a man is guarding your home and your children
  • usually not grossed out easily

  • some say that men are not sensitive or intuitive enough to provide adequate child care
  • men can be more intimidating than women. If all of your children are girls, they might not be comfortable with being watched by a male nanny
  • May be unable to relate to female issues
Bottom Line: I would probably stick with the traditional female nanny because in many cases they have been trained in many areas that will benefit your family in terms of safety, nutrition and education.

Those who have more money than the rest of us may opt for one of each if they one or more child of each sex.

*this list was not meant in any way to be sexist, it was intended to profile the average female/male and compare their qualities for childcare*

Pregnancy And Heartburn

While I was fortunate to have never experienced heartburn while I was pregnant with my son, my girlfriend, who is currently expecting, has been experiencing it daily.

WebMD reports that one-half of all pregnant women report symptoms of severe heartburn, particularly during their second and third trimesters. Heartburn, also called acid indigestion, is an irritation or burning sensation of the esophagus caused by stomach contents that reflux (comes back up) from the stomach.

It is believed that heartburn during pregnancy may occur because of changing hormone levels, which can affect the muscles of the digestive tract and how different foods are tolerated.

Pregnancy hormones can cause the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular valve between the stomach and esophagus) to relax, allowing stomach acids to splash back up into the esophagus. In addition, the enlarged uterus can crowd the abdomen, pushing stomach acids upward.

The informative site has some suggestions to prevent or reduce the heartburn:

  • Eat several small meals each day instead of three large ones.
  • Eat slowly.
  • Avoid fried, spicy or rich foods, or any foods that seem to cause relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and increase the risk of heartburn.
  • Drink less while eating. Drinking large amounts while eating may increase the risk of acid reflux and heartburn.
  • Don't lie down directly after eating.
  • Keep the head of your bed higher than the foot of your bed. Or place pillows under your shoulders to help prevent stomach acids from rising into your chest.
  • Ask your doctor about using medications such as Tums or Maalox, which are generally safe to use during pregnancy. You may find that liquid heartburn relievers are more effective in treating heartburn as they coat the esophagus.
  • Wear lose-fitting clothing. Tight-fitting clothes can increase the pressure on your stomach and abdomen.

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves Introduce Us To Levi

Matthew McConaughey and his longtime love Camila Alves introduce us to their new son Levi in OK Magazine this week.

The couple talks to the mag about of the way they handle everything in their lives: easy-going and as a team.

You can see how laid back they are when Matthew talks about Levi's delivery.

"We found a great rhythm. Contractions started kicking in. I sat there with her, right between her legs. We got tribal on it, we danced to it! I was DJ-ing this Brazilian music."
Levi arrived on July 7 at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, weighing a healthy 7 lbs., 4 oz. Matthew tells the magazine that he kept a detailed diary of his and Camila's hospital experience.
"I have it all chronicled," he explained. "Becoming a dad is something I've dreamed of doing since I was 10. Becoming a father felt very, very natural. We were jamming! She was sweating. No painkiller, let's go. She just clicked into that gear that only a woman has at a time like this. We'd been up for 40-something hours, and we went from dead tired to a really steadfast, 'Let's handle this… let's stay in the rhythm. Don't let the contraction be more than you.'"
Even though the couple planned for a natural birth, in the end it came down to what was safest for both mom and baby.
"We ended up having an epidural because, on the large contractions, the umbilical cord was being compressed. They went in and tried the vacuum. This is where I learned — and no one tells you this — but having a baby is a bloody, pukey, sweaty, primeval thing! And I mean that as a beautiful thing. It is wild. But the vacuum didn't work, and the doctor said, 'C-section.'

STUDY: Breast Feeding Releases A Bonding Hormone

In a new study, reported in the journal PLoS Computational Biology it has been proven that when a mother breast feeds her baby, a "trust" hormone is released, enriching the mother to child bond.

The hormone Oxytonin is released into the mother's brain, the same hormone that produces contractions during labor and allows milk to flow from the mammary glands.

Studies show the hormone reduces fear and prompts feelings of trust and confidence.

When the baby suckles, specialized neurons in the mother's brain release the hormone in intense bursts from the nerve endings.

One professor involved in the study says the findings could be used to explain other similar brain activities.
