Halle Berry Is A REAL Mom

On Monday, we featured a picture of Halle Berry out for the first time since giving birth.

The new mom looked so fresh and fabulous, it was like she hadn't given birth at all. She definitely had the internet buzzing.

While it had appeared that Halle had shed her baby weight - quickly, new pictures taken yesterday show that she is a real mom.

Unlike most celebrities who won't be seen in public with even an ounce of post-baby podge, after almost two months out of the limelight with new baby Nahla, down to earth Halle was seen in a skimpy T-shirt dress which revealed she still has her post-baby tummy.

Clearly Halle is not fazed by the fact that she has not yet shed all her baby weight, as she made no attempt to cover up or hide away her figure.

I love her curves! She reminds me of Salma Hayek in this picture.

Are Your Kids Vaccinations Up To Date?

In a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers say that more than a quarter of American children are not meeting the U.S. government's recommendations for childhood vaccinations.

Looking at children between 18 months and their 3rd birthday, the CDC researchers found that 28 percent did not meet vaccination recommendations. The results were based on a 2005 government survey involving 17,563 U.S. children in that age group.
Two thirds of those children had missed doses, with the rest getting them at the wrong age or too soon after a previous dose to be considered completely effective.

Even with the missed or late doses, the United States has one of the best childhood vaccination records in the world, with fewer than 1 percent of parents not having their children vaccinated at all said Elizabeth Luman of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.

"For the vast majority of parents, they're bringing their children to get vaccinated. The schedule is very complex and it requires a lot of visits to vaccination providers at specific times. And for parents who are busy, that can be really logistically difficult," Luman said in a telephone interview.

Charlotte Church Takes Ruby For A Stroll

First time mom Charlotte Church takes 7 month old daughter Ruby out for a walk in South Wales yesterday.

The 22-year-old singer, has been taking some time out of the spotlight to be with Ruby.

The Charlotte Church Show will be back on the air this summer.

A rep for the production company recently said

“She's raring to put down the pot cleaner and pick up the microphone.”

I believe that Charlotte pushes Ruby in a Tutti Bambini stroller in last years colors/pattern, but it hard to tell because she has it so reclined with the hood off .

Having a Dog May Reduce Kids Allergies

German researchers believe that having a dog in the house reduces the risk that young children will develop allergies.

The study, which was conducted over a six-year period, found that growing up with a pet trains the immune system to be less sensitive to potential triggers for allergies like asthma, eczema and hay fever.

Kids may get beneficial early exposure to germs carried into the house on the animal’s fur, which helps their immune systems develop.

“Our results show clearly that the presence of a dog in the home during subjects’ infancy is associated with a significantly low level of sensitization to pollens and inhaled allergens,” said Joachim Heinrich of the National Research Centre for Environmental Health in Munich.

The same protective effect was not seen in children who had frequent contact with dogs but did not have one at home.

Previous studies have suggested that exposure to pets may have a protective effect against allergies but many of these studies were based on retrospective questioning of subjects about their exposure.

I knew our dog was good for more than giving kisses and finishing my sons half eaten dinners!

Canadian Moms Don't Throw Out Your BPA Bottles - They are Worth $$$

A friend called this afternoon to tell me that she had just got back from Zellers with a $180 CREDIT.

She emptied he cupboards of any bottle or sippy that she was using that had BPA in them and took everything back to Zellers.

They happily credited her the FULL retail price for everything in the form of a store credit that is good for 2 years.

After hearing this I called and received the list of goods that are being recalled and REFUNDED by the store.

I am just putting that list together and it will be up for parents to look over this evening.

In the meantime dig out your bottles.

Pediped FLEX Are “The next best thing to bare feet” For Your Toddler!

Written by Cari

The news that Pediped was introducing a new line of shoes for toddlers was very exciting for me. I had fallen in love with the “Originals” line that my six-month-old daughter wears everywhere and I was ecstatic that my three-and-a-half-year-old son could have the benefits of Pediped as well.

I promptly ordered the “Conner” camouflage running shoe in size 29 (US size 12) and the adorable “Giselle” Mary Jane style shoe in chocolate brown with polka dots, for my 18-month-old niece. The new “Flex” line offers the same quality, comfort and style as the “Original” Pediped line with the exception of their new flexible, skid-resistant rubber soles, arch supports and customizable insoles (perfect since my son isn’t quite into size 12 yet!). They have also been recognized by the American Podiatric Medical Association as promoting quality foot health, something incredibly reassuring for parents who are trying to find the best footwear possible for their pre-schoolers.

My son loves his new Pediped “Flex” shoes so much he wears them everywhere. I love them because they are stylish, good for his feet, and because he can slip them on easily himself. They are appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use and come in a variety of cool colours and styles for boys (not to mention the super-cute options for girls!).

I have already ordered my son a pair of “Flex” sandals for the summer months and can’t wait for them to arrive. I’m also planning to get a pair that he can take to school with him in September as his “indoor” shoes. They will take him from the classroom to the gym in style and comfort and I won’t have to worry about him having trouble changing his shoes by himself. Of course, when my baby girl outgrows her “Originals”, I will be looking to keep her feet developing healthfully and fashionably in the Pediped “Flex” line as well.

So, I guess the only question I have for Pediped at this point is: When are you coming out with a line of cute and comfy shoes for adults???

GIVEAWAY!! - We are giving away 2 pairs of these fabulous shoes. To enter please email us at giveaways@growingyourbaby.com with the title ‘Pedipeds’.

Australian Moms To Be Able To Insure Their Unborn Fetus'

If you had the opportunity to insure your unborn fetus would you?

Would you pay a premium to know that if your baby arrives with a congenital defect, your family will receive money, which could help offset medical expenses?

The insurance company ING has devised a baby policy for women aged 16 to 40 which will deliver payouts of up to 50,000 dollars (46,640 US) for babies born with Down's syndrome, spina bifida or a cleft palate, the Sun-Herald said.

A stillborn baby could get a 10,000-dollar payout while women who suffered complications during pregnancy or birth could also be awarded a pay-out, it said.

ING spokesman Mark Vilo said the new policy allowed the company to match up with "social trends and advances in medical technology," the paper said.

"Every woman in the process of having a child knows the risks," he said.

"We don't make people undergo genetic testing to find out things they don't want to."

"With the median age of new mums now nearly 31, (up from 27 in 1985), the risk of pregnancy complications and birth defects increases dramatically," ING said on its website.

"For a women aged 35 or more the risk of stillborn is 1 in 440, as opposed to 1 in 1,000 for younger women."

If this became available to North America women I would do it. Knowing that there could be a fund that would help contribute to the needs of my baby if he/she was born with issues is reassuring.

One of the biggest stress factors that parents of special needs kids have is trying to finance all of the gear their child needs.

The New South Wales Midwives Association, believes that this policy plays on the fears of pregnant women.

"It is marketing fear and uncertainty when women are vulnerable during pregnancy."

I disagree with this association because I think that this insurance company is just being practical. Babies are born with special issues everyday.

At some point the parents will be out of pocket for a lot of extra expenses (special food, nursing, strollers, seats, equipment and alternative forms of travel). Having this would ease that stress.

Baby Registry Etiquette - Expectant Mom

Years ago it was viewed as rude to go to a store and request items that could be purchased for a new baby. Now it is seen as helpful for guests that would like to make sure they get you a gift - you are going to use.

Picking out what your child is going to need before they have even arrived is a big task and it can be overwhelming, especially if you are a first time mom.

Here are some tips that may help you register for your baby:

  • Know What You Want - Do some research before you head to the store. Read reviews and see what other moms are saying. Know which bouncer, swing or stroller you are looking for. Seeing so many products in one place is confusing, which may cause you to pick out something that looks good as opposed to something that IS good.
  • Take Your Time - The whole registry doesn't need to be done in a day. You can make a few trips to the store to complete the list. Start by doing gear (stroller, swing, bouncer, bassinet and exersaucer) one day, the nursery another and layettes and accessories on a third visit.
  • Be Modest - Just because other people are buying you gifts, it doesn't mean that you can ask for more than what you need. Remember that too much gear will clutter up your house.
  • Register Early - A safe time to register is around 28 weeks. By that time you will know that your baby is developing well and that gives your guests a few weeks to decide on what to get. Showers are normally held between 32 and 36 weeks.
  • Keep Your Registry To 2 Department Stores - It is confusing for your shower guests and family to have to go to more than 2 stores to find your gift. If you want a specialty item from a third store you may want to suggest it to your parents or purchase it yourself.
  • Do NOT request cash gift cards - If your friends and family want to give a cash envelope at your shower, they will. It is a bad idea to suggest that anyone wishing to get you a gift should do cash or a gift certificate at a particular store.
  • Keep it simple - Request gift sets as opposed to single items (thermometer, nail clippers and medicine dropper, spoons and bowls). Having friends and family who don't have babies search high and low for individual items will just frustrate them and cause them to abandon ship. Bath sets, feeding sets and safety kits usually come with all of the necessary pieces.
  • Ask for what you need - A baby shower is usually thrown to get you started, not to set you up for life. Keep your requested items to the first 9 months of your baby's life.

Getting started:

Here is a list of items you may need to get started:

  • 5-7 sleepers
  • 5-10 onesies
  • 2 newborn hats
  • 1 sweater
  • 2 hooded towels
  • 10 wash cloths - to get started 10-15 more as baby gets older
  • baby wash, bum cream, lotion
  • thermometer, nail clippers, soft hair brush
  • infant Tylenol (dye free)
  • Diaper bag
  • 2 sheets for crib
  • 3 light blankets
  • change pad cover
  • 2 heavy blankets
  • 3 -4 burp pads
  • 4 bottles - even if you are breastfeeding

Baby Gear:

  • Resist buying too many items for 0-3 months. You baby will grow out of that stage VERY quickly.
  • Buy nicer clothing in sizes 6-9 months. The weight gain will start to level out by then and your baby will be able to use these clothes for longer that a few weeks.
  • In order to save time and money, you can wait a few months to purchase items like the highchair, exersaucer and developmental toys.

Father and Son Find Newborn Abandoned in Field

While out for a walk yesterday, Randy Petroskey and son Nick were surprised when they came across something that appeared to be a a plastic, pink doll sold by toy stores.

When the boy's foot moved, Randy, 52, a retired police captain, called 911. He used his polo shirt to wrap the naked boy and brushed off ants and flies that crawled over him. He was cautious not to destroy the boy's umbilical cord, which remained attached.

The pair were "miraculously" standing within feet of the abandoned infant and likely saved the boy's life.

The baby, who was only hours old, was rushed to Manatee Memorial Hospital. Police believe that he was probably delivered, and immediately abandoned, in the woods.

This story is sad to me for a couple reasons.
  1. There are many amazing couples out there waiting to be parents - who can't conceive. If this girl knew that she couldn't care for the baby she should have at least had the courtesy to take him to a safe haven place like a fire station or hospital.
  2. Now, for the rest of his life, this little boy will have to live with the fact that his mom abandoned him in a field seconds after he arrived - unless his new parents decide to keep that a secret.

Vinyl Attraction Adds Something Special to a Room

I recently had the opportunity to try vinyl lettering from Vinyl Attractions. Although I had never considered wall decals for my home, I fell completely in love with the samples of the children’s vinyl appliqués on their site. So as not to show favouritism between my son and daughter, I decided to order wall letters for our toy room. I chose the alphabet in 3” navy blue “A bug’s life” font and numbers one through ten in a plain blue style.

The lettering comes on a roll that is pre-spaced. I easily installed the 1 – 10 numbers by simply levelling the strip on the wall. However, I wanted to do the alphabet in a wave pattern rather than just a straight line. That task proved to be a lot more daunting than I anticipated, but the end result was worth it! I have to say, I love the “bug” letters. They are adorable and look great on our toy room wall.

The installation process takes some time and care, but the product comes with a detailed instruction sheet to guide you step by step. Through visiting the website and seeing the packaging, I have read that the decals are “easily removed”. From my understanding, that means they can be taken off but not reused. That is the only disappointing part about this product. I know we will be moving within the next year and I will have to leave them in our toy room. I guess that means I will have to order more Vinyl Attractions for our new home!

To see a variety of adorable wall vinyl ideas for any kid’s space, visit Vinyl Attractions website www.vinylattraction.com.

Our Favorite Environmentally Friendly Baby Products

There has been a huge push lately for companies to go organic, biosphenol-A free and lead free. Parents are now looking for products that are recyclable, made from safe materials and free of chemicals that may cause future health issues.

Since starting this site 3 years ago, I have covered many great green products for kids and babies. There are some that I liked and many that I loved.

Here are a few of the ones I loved and why:

1. Orbit Green Edition Stroller - The orbit stroller is one of the hottest strollers on the market and it just got better after the company released an ivory 'green edition'.

What I love about this product is that the company took extra steps to make this product as environmentally friendly as possible. The interior is lined with 100% organic cotton, it has a durable wool exterior and it is free of PVC and phthlates.

Orbit products are designed for best-in-industry disassembly, so that the individual pieces can be easily recycled.

2. Natural Mat Organic Mattresses - Because the average baby sleeps 16 hours a day, Natural mat created a safe place for them to rest. Their mattresses are 100% organic, Non-allergenic and anti-dust mite, Naturally Fire Retardant and handmade. All of their raw materials come from 100% renewable and sustainable sources that comply with Fair Trade policies and all packaging used for Natural Mat mattresses is 100% biodegradable and 100% recyclable.

3. Fleurville's Re-run Fabric Diaper Bags - Ever wonder where all of the empty water bottles go? Modern baby company, Fleurville uses them in their new fabric called Re-Run™. Each Re-Run™ Messenger bag they make keeps ten (10) 600ml plastic water bottles out of landfill. The micropod, which was designed to hold a few baby products for quick trips keeps three (3) 600ml plastic water bottles out of the landfill.

4. Plan Toys - Plan toys is the ultimate green toy company. Since 1981 they have been using replenishable rubberwood which is preservative free and processed naturally. No harmful additives or coloring are used and all paints are tested for safety. Over the years they have fine tuned their green initiative by introducing recycled paper and using soy ink for printing materials. Our family loves plan toys because they are innovative, help with our sons development and are reasonably priced.

5. NewBorn Free Bottles - Long before anyone was talking about the hormone disrupting chemical Biosphenol-A, Born free was making baby bottles without it.

This company has been working to get the word out about for the last 4 years and finally the world is listening.

6. California Baby - If you are looking for a great product to use on your child's skin, California Baby is worth a look.

On top of using all natural ingredients in all of their shampoos, body washes and lotions, this eco-friendly company prints on recycled paper and uses soy inks for product info tags and literature and bottles their product in HDPE #2 bottles, the easiest plastic for consumers to recycle. I love the way all of the products smell and it makes me feel good to know that I don't have to worry about my son being harmed by synthetic fragrances or phthalates.

7. ImagiPLAY - All of ImagiPLAY's toys are made from eco-friendly materials, with plantain-grown rubberwood being a favorite. This wood is an eco-toymaker favorite because it is a splinter-free hardwood. Everything they produce is made from renewable, sustainable materials.

Because most wooden toys distributed in North America are made from Pine and made in China. The raw Pine is primarily produced in Canada, shipped to China where the toy is produced then shipped back to North America as a finished product! Seeing this as waste of resources, ImagiPLAY selects factories that are close to their raw materials to avoid this needless expenditure of gas, oil and greenhouse gases.

All of this a an challenging product for your developing child? ImagiPLAY makes the COOLEST puzzles you will ever find.

8. Green Toys - This new company impressed me at this years Toy Fair. They had a modest booth, but lots of passion about the environment. To create their bold and colorful toys, Green Toys uses recycled milk containers as the main ingredient.

All of their products are packaged in recycled corrugated boxes with no plastics, cellophane or twist-ties, and are 100% recyclable. So, not only are they earth-friendly and ready for your recycling bin, it won't take you an hour to break into a toy while your toddler stands waiting patiently.

9. Cleanwell - Cleanwell hand sanitizer is a must for any green parent.

This product kills 99.99% of germs on contact MRSA, E.Coli and Salmonella. It is 100% green, safe for kids and free of Triclosan.

This product is 100% biodegradable, which means that it breaks down quickly and completely without upsetting the natural balance of the ecosystem.

Rose Rock, mother to famous comedian Chris Rock has written a book about parenting that is refreshing and easy to follow.

In her 42 years as a mother, Rose has raised 10 children and cared for 17 foster children.

This book reads more like a friend giving advice, than a supermom touting her ways. Rose speaks from her heart and offers great advice that would benefit a family of 3 or one of 10.

While main premise of this book is: Mama Rock's 10 vital rules, Rose also makes it clear that 'any rule can be modified to fit into your own home'.

She reiterates the very basics of life, including having respect for your parents - always, having respect for your siblings and staying together as a family.

In the words of Chris Rock,

"As of the writing of this foreword, none of Rose's children has a criminal record or has had any baby mommas. How did Rose and my father pull this off? With a little love, a lot of understanding and a good belt."

A Nice Added Bonus: Rose's kids are quoted in each segment of the book reminiscing about their childhood. They stories support the clever words Rose writes in this book.

It is available for purchase at Amazon.

Could This Be The World's Biggest Baby?

Meet Karan Singh(pictured right with his mom). At just 10 months old he weighs 48lbs and stands 3ft 2in tall, possibly making him the world's biggest baby .

While his size may be a surprise to us, it isn't to Karan's mom. She is one of the tallest women in Asia at standing 7ft 2in tall.

'People who don't know us stare but Karan always wins them around with his smile,' Svetlana Singh said.

'He has a very jolly nature and has already started walking. The food he demands must give him extra energy because he is very strong.'

The parents, both doctors from Meerut, India, are proud of their size. Father Sanjay, who measures nearly 2m (6ft 6in), fell in love at first sight.

He added: 'I was unsure if I would ever find a wife to match my height, but as soon as I met Svetlana I knew we would make a great couple.'

The unbelievable part of this story is that Karan's parents feed him 20 TIMES a day!!

You have to worry is this is safe. His parents are both doctors and they think it's ok to feed a 10 month old 20 times a day??

Uk Couple Shows Off Their Identical Triplets

For an event that is supposed to only occur once in 200 million births, this has been the year of the identical triplets.

Richard Rees, 22, and his 23-year-old fiance Carmela Testa, who is a midwife welcomed a set of Identical triplets in January at 33 weeks gestation.

At birth the 3 girls weighed between 3lb 4oz and 3lb 10oz and spent three weeks in an incubator until they were strong enough to go home.

When Carmela found out she was expecting triplets she was shocked.

"They weren't planned. I'm quite small - only 5ft tall - so at the unit they joked that out of all the midwives it would have to be me that gave birth to triplets."

She added: "Everything is fine now and the girls are all putting on weight. I'm so overwhelmed when I see them. I can't believe they are mine and that they are perfect."

Even though the girls are identical, the couple doesn't have any trouble telling them apart.

"Olivia has a strawberry birthmark on her neck, Gabriella is a little bit smaller and Alessia has a sharper cry," explained Mr Rees, a vocational coach.

Identical triplets occur when one fertilized egg splits to create three embryos which grow separately but normally in the womb.

Jennifer Lopez To Show Off Her Parenting Skill On Reality TV

New mom Jennifer Lopez is currently filming a new reality show that will focus on how she juggles her career — including launching a new fragrance — with motherhood.

The show, set to air on TLC, will "deliver a slice of [Jennifer's] life that audiences have never seen before.

"I am excited to be part of the TLC family. I'm looking forward to sharing this exciting journey together." the star said in a statement released today.

"Jennifer is unbelievably passionate about life and will be an incredible role model for our audience," TLC President Angela Shapiro-Mathes said.

While I like Jennifer Lopez, I can think of many other women who would make for better role models for busy moms out there.

Having a nanny, all of the best gear and a private jet doesn't make for a hard life.

No air date has been released
