Couple Welcomes Baby With 12 Functioning Fingers, 12 Toes

A San Francisco couple is beaming after becoming the proud parents of a healthy but incredibly rare baby boy this month.

Baby Kamani Hubbard has six-fully formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet. The condition, called “polydactyly”, is not an uncommon genetic trait, but doctors say they've never seen a case so remarkable.

01234212.png

When the baby arrived three weeks ago, he seemed so perfect at birth no one noticed.

Because he looked so normal, hospital staff only told Miryoki Gross, Kamani’s mom that the he was six pounds in good health.

It wasn't until his dad Kris Hubbard noticed this spectacularly rare case of polydactyly: 6-perfect fingers on each hand and 6-perfect toes on each foot.

Some family members of his family have had six fingers, not completely developed.

In fact Kris Hubbard himself had nubs of sixth fingers removed as a child as these non-functional digits routinely are.

The unusual part about this case is that the new baby's extra digits are functional.

“It's merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing,” said Dr. Michael Treece and St. Luke's Hospital Pediatrician. “I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place. I realize children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than slight. But imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist, if nothing else think of their typing skills."
This little guy is so cute, I bet no one would even notice unless someone showed them...

Alyson Hannigan Has 'Pregnancy Brain'

During her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday, Alyson Hannigan revealed that she is finding that being pregnant not only gives her cravings – but makes her feel like a stoned Koala bear.

alyson-hannigan-and-ellen-degeneres-jpg.jpg

“I get tired a lot and I have pregnancy brain, which I never realized was a thing but it is,” the expectant mom told the host. “I sort of feel like a Koala bear where I’m slightly stoned all the time and I’ll say the wrong word.”

Not one to miss a good comeback, Ellen DeGeneres responds,

“I’m not pregnant, but I have that brain too. I don’t have an excuse.”

The mom-to-be also told the host about her not so weird craving,

“[I crave] ginger ale big time,” she said. “I didn’t drink soda before and suddenly it was like, ‘I need a ginger ale,’ and surprisingly my mother craved ginger ale when she was pregnant with me as well.”

Octuplets Mom 'Obsessed With Having Children'

The world was amazed this week after Californian mom Nadya Suleman, 33, welcomed octuplets, the second set ever born in the U.S.

But the amazement quickly turned to concern after it was revealed the the 8 new babies would be joining their 6 siblings, who are all under the age 7.

Yesterday the octuplets grandma revealed that all of the babies we actually implanted and not the result of fertility drugs as previously suspected.

Today, Angela Suleman is speaking out about her daughter's addiction to having kids saying that she conceived all 14 of her babies through in vitro fertilization. The soon to be busy mom isn't married and has been fixated on being a mother since she was a teenager.

Last year, Nadya Suleman decided to have more embryos implanted, hoping to have "just one more girl," her mother told The Los Angeles Times.

"And look what happened. Octuplets. Dear God," Angela Suleman told the newspaper Friday.

She said she wasn't supportive of her daughter's decision to try to get pregnant again.

"It can't go on any longer," the grandmother told the AP. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."

It wasn't clear whether the octuplets mother was ever married. Nadya is divorced but the ex-husband isn't the babies' father.

All 14 children were conceived using the same sperm donor.

I do not believe that this story can get any crazier... While it is not for us to judge, I want to know who thought it was ok to implant this many embryos into someone who already has done this 5 times before.

Best 6-Year Old Birthday Present: Dad Home From Iraq In A Box!

Gabriel Hurles will never forget his 6th birthday.

While celebrating the big occasion with his friends, the lucky little boy peeled back the wrapping paper on a big box to find the surprise of his young life.

'It's my dad!' he announced joyfully to his classmates at Sutro Elementary School in Dayton, Nevada. 'Hi, Daddy!'

Army mechanic Casey Hurles, 23, who was hiding inside the box, hadn't seen his son since he left in June.

When he learned his leave would coincide with his son's birthday, he hatched a plan to hide out in the big box.

'It was such a rush of emotion,' said Hurles, who said he got butterflies in his stomach while waiting in the box.

After the excited daddy sat down and ate a cupcake with the birthday boy, teacher Dawn VanSickle presented him with a banner from the class that read, 'Welcome Home. Thank you for your service.'

Mega Multiples On The Rise: Syria Welcomes 2 Sets Of Quints In 3 Days

A woman in the Syrian capital of Damascus has given birth to quintuplets, marking the second such birth in Syria during a three-day period, a doctor says.

Gynecologist Kana'an al-Saqa said Thursday that a 36-year-old woman, whose identity was not reported, gave birth to four girls and a boy at Damascus' Maternity Hospital.

The babies arrived by Caesarean section after 34 weeks of pregnancy.

While quintuplet births used to only occur once for every 50 million people, the country saw a similar birth Tuesday when a woman from al-Raqa city gave birth to two boys and three girls.

If I had of covered this story last year, 2 sets of quints in one week would be unusual, but this year - for some reason - it doesn't seem to unique...

It's like celebrities who are having twins...

Report: Octuplets Mom Already Has 6 Kids

CBS News reported today that the California woman who astonished doctors earlier this week by giving birth to octuplets at a suburban Los Angeles hospital already has six other children.

The unidentified woman delivered six boys and two girls prematurely by Caesarean section on Monday, surprising doctors who had been expecting seven babies.

Two unnamed acquaintances told the a CBS reporter, who visited the woman's Los Angeles-area home, that the mother already has six other children.

One of those acquaintances said that the mother lived with her parents and that two of her other children were twins.

"She is young," the acquaintance says, "fairly young. She has six children already. And in those six children, she has a set of twins."

A man, who came to the door of the family home, confirmed to CBS reporter that he's the grandfather of the octuplets, but refused to speak to her.

"From what you know about this family, and this household, do you think they'll be able to support 14 kids?" the reporter asked the acquaintance.

"Well," she responded, "so far, they've been fine with the six they have. Fourteen I don't know."

If this is true, it is heartbreaking to know that someone would put themselves in this situation on purpose when they should be caring for their other children.

How does one pay for 8 or even 14 kids without a lot of assistance?

Cloth Diaper Dilemma

I need some help from our cloth diaper mommies.

I am currently looking for a good All In One cloth diaper to use for the new baby, but am having trouble sifting through the THOUSANDS of companies who make them.

Realistically I could buy one of each diaper I am looking to try and then buy more when I decide which one I like. Its just that I don't want to have 10 different kinds of diapers and then get stuck with some that don't work for me.

So...if there are any moms out there that have a good recommendation please let me know or if you have used any of the following diapers and have some feedback, I would love to hear that as well.

Here are the ones that are currently under consideration:

  • Bum Genius
  • Dry Bees
  • Monkey Doodlez
  • Thirstees
  • SwaddleBees
We have already tried G Diapers, Kissaluvs, Blueberry Pocket Diapers and Kushies All In Ones. I was fond of the latter 3 for many reasons and may end up using them, but I just wanted to see if there was something else out there.

Hearts And Style For Your Little Valentine
Kate Gosselin Offers Octuplets Mom Advice

Just hours after news broke that a Southern California woman gave birth to a set of octuplets, Kate shared with Access Hollywood some advice for the new mom.

For starters, life will never be the same from this point forward.

“I feel like I have octuplets sometimes, so I say, ‘Wow! Hold on! Life will never be the same,” Kate told Access. “[It will be] better and different — and sometimes lonely, believe it or not. And I don’t mean lonely or lacking kids, I just mean that others will never be able to relate and the parents will feel like every day is an uphill battle that only they can fight.”
Kate also shared advice she, in retrospect, wished someone had told their family early on.
“I wish they would have told us that although we are always surrounded by more people than we know what to do with, we often feel lonely and lack friends and family who truly know how we feel,” she said.
In addition to a larger family, Kate said that many aspects of life also changed that she had not anticipated.
“I wish someone would have told me that every — every aspect of my life would change… not only our family size, number of children, hopes and dreams, logistics of how things are done and that houses are not built for our family’s makeup,” Kate explained. “Boxes of cereal, rolls of paper towels, and boxes of snacks or recipes are never ever going to be big enough again for us!”

Masche Sextuplets To Star In "Raising Sextuplets"

Mega Multiples seem to be getting a lot of attention lately.

With the success of Jon and Kate Plus 8 and the arrival of the amazing octuplets today, networks are clamouring to profile these families.

The Masche Sextuplets will be the next Mega family to hit the small screen when the continuation of their show "Raising Sextuplets" airs on WE in June.

The family decided to do the show because they thought it was the perfect opportunity to document all six of their children's lives. The show will follow the family and show how Bryan and Jenny Masche raise their three boys, Blake, Cole, and Grant and their three girls, Savannah, Molli, and Bailey, while still managing to keep full-time jobs. The family lives by themselves and manages to do everything by themselves; the only help the family does receive is from the sextuplets' grandparents. To manage this, Bryan and Jenny have to maintain different work schedules. Brian works during the day as a pharmaceutical sales rep and Jenny works the night shift in the ER of Kingman Regional Medical Center as a physician's assistant.

The couple's adventure all began when they decided to try artificial insemination after not being able to have children on their own for two and a half years. On June 11, 2007 the sextuplets were born in Phoenix at the Good Samaritan Hospital through cesarean section. Jenny delivered the sextuplets at 30 weeks, eight weeks premature. After the delivery Jenny went into heart failure and nearly died. Luckily, Jenny is now well and happy and the family was blessed with six healthy babies who have no health issues.

California Mom Welcomes Octuplets!

A California woman shocked doctors by giving birth on Monday to octuplets, believed to be only the second set of eight babies born in the United States.

The six boys and two girls were doing well and were in stable condition in the neonatal intensive care unit, said Dr. Karen Maples at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower.

But two needed some help to breath with ventilators, she told a press conference.

The eight babies arrived at an amazing 31 weeks gestation by Caesarean section over a five-minute period, stunning a 46-member medical team that was expecting only seven babies.

They weighed between 1 pound 8 ounces (680 grams) and 3 pounds 4 ounces (1.47 kg) and doctors initially identified them by the letters A through H as they were born.

"We decided to proceed with the delivery in anticipation of seven babies. We had done some drills, some preliminary dry runs," Maples said.

"Lo and behold, after we got to Baby G, which is what we expected, we were surprised by Baby H."

Maples said she had been following the mother, who was not identified, since the first trimester of her pregnancy.

The first live-born octuplets were born in Houston in 1998, and one baby died about a week later. The surviving siblings — girls Ebuka, Gorom, Chidi, Chima and Echerem, and their brothers Ikem and Jioke — celebrated their 10th birthday in December.

Ricky Martin Strolls With His Babies

New daddy Ricky Martin Takes his twins Matteo and Valentino for a stroll in NYC last week.

The babies, who ride in Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30/30 Infant Seats on a Duette SW Stroller frame, arrived in August via a surrogate mom.

The hands on daddy recently spoke to People Magazine about not having a nanny saying,

"I’m doing this on my own because I don’t want to miss a moment. I have a personal assistant who helps me, someone who takes care of me while I’m taking care of them, but I’m the one who changes the diapers, the one that feeds them, the one that bathes them, the one that puts them to sleep. For any parent, the first couple of months tend to get a little bit intense."

Product Review: Label Daddy

Now that we have 2 kids, differentiating between their stuff is a must.

Mr. 3-year-old has become very possessive of his stuff causing us to look for ways to show him who's stuff is who's.

That's how I was introduced to Label Daddy, a great company that allows parents to create one of a kind labels for their kids stuff.

This is perfect for your social little one who might attend daycare, go on play dates or participate in sports.

I can't count the number of times we have been out and there has been another child with the same bottle or sippy cup as us. Having one of these labels on your stuff will ensure that your child will come home with all of the stuff they brought to a party or play date.

They can also be especially useful for kids who have allergies or special needs. The bright, vibrant colors will catch the attention and remind anyone who doesn't know which foods or medicines are harmful.

When our labels arrived I was pleasantly surprised at how well they stuck to anything I placed them on. They are thin, but mighty.

Most Label Daddy labels are microwave safe, dishwasher safe, Water resistant and UV resistant. This makes them great for beach toys, books or lunch boxes.

Our son has wanted his labels placed on anything that he thinks the baby might want like his ipod, trucks and his prized dinosaur collection.

The labels have a had great staying power and have hung on to all of the toys even though we have carted them throughout the house and out to grandma and grampa's house.

For an idea of their selection, please visit labeldaddy.com

In addition to kids products, the company also offers return address labels, spice labels and photo stickers.

Breast Milk To Cure An Infected Tear Duct?

Yesterday we noticed that our new baby has some goop in his one eye when he cried.

As the day went on, it got worse - but only when he cried, which led me to believe that it had something to do with his tear ducts.

A quick check online took me to ehow.com where one of their contributors had posted this remedy.

  • Apply a warm compress on the newborn baby's eye.
  • Using your knuckle or pinkie finger apply a small amount of pressure at the inner edge of your baby's eye and make short sweeping strokes in a downward motion. this encourages the tear duct to open.
  • Express a few drops of breast milk and drop into the infected eye. Antibodies in the breast milk will help fight the infection.
  • Repeat four to five times a day.

Yes you read right... They wanted me to drop breast milk into my little guys eyes - so I did and it worked! We used a warm cloth to clean the goopy stuff, pressed on his swelled duct to move the infected stuff out (lots of stuff came out, which reduced the size of it) and then put a couple of drops of breast milk into it to make it better.

Everything looks good this morning, but I may have to repeat this today if it comes back when the little monkey starts to cry.

Is it Gas or A Smile?

For the last couple of days my new guy has been smiling at me when were relaxing on the couch.

If I mention it to someone they always say that he is too young to smile and that it's probably just gas.

But is it?

Babies have been found to smile at birth, or even sooner -- ultrasounds have actually spotted upside-down frowns on babies in the last trimester of pregnancy.

What is not know is why they do it so early on.

"Some research shows that they smile most often as they're falling asleep and waking up," says Alan Fogel, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and author of Infancy: Infant, Family and Society. "Those times are probably inherently pleasurable for babies, and their good feelings seem to create a smile."
Even though I know it's not a 'social smile'( a full smile that is prompted by something you do) it is nice to know that my guy is smiling because something makes him happy.

Doctors To Remove Feet From Baby's Bum

Eight-month-old Faith Mwampe from Zambia is set to undergo a potentially lifesaving operation to have the feet of an unformed twin protruding from her buttocks removed.

While she was expecting, Faith's 18-year-old mother, Mercy Lenganji, an ultrasound revealed she was expecting twins.

After just one baby arrived, Zambian doctors allegedly labelled her condition as so shocking they hid her from her mother for two hours after birth for fear she would go into shock.

"They put Faith in an incubator as is the procedure with all babies born with deformities in Zambia, and only then was I allowed to see my child,” Mercy said, adding that she loved her baby unconditionally.

But UK tabloid The Sun reports that when her father first set eyes on his daughter, he walked straight out of the ward, and out of her life for good.

The baby will now have to undergo a five-hour surgery that is deemed very risky. Without it, doctors fear she will be unable to walk or lead a normal life.

Ty Introduces Sasha and Malia 'Inspired' Dolls

The Oak Brook-based company denies that the dolls were created after the President's daughter. They say they chose the names because "they are beautiful names," not because of any resemblance to Malia and Sasha Obama, said spokeswoman Tania Lundeen.

"There's nothing on the dolls that refers to the Obama girls," Lundeen said. "It would not be fair to say they are exact replications of these girls. They are not."

The dolls were introduced in early January and a limited supply has been shipped to retailers.

Kate Garraway Expecting Baby #2

TV Host Kate Garraway announced she is three months pregnant with her second child yesterday.

The 41-year-old GMTV star, who already has a daughter, Darcey, with husband Derek Draper, is said to be 'over the moon to be having another baby.'

In a statement issued with her husband, the mom-to-be commented:

'Darcey is very excited about having a new brother or sister to play with. We all can't wait for the arrival.'

The baby is due in August.

Kate caused a bit of controversy last summer when she was photographed pretending to breast feed a cow.

The ad was put together to support a documentary that she made called Other People’s Breast Milk.

In it, Kate made the point that giving human milk to a calf is any more shocking than giving cow’s milk to a baby.

Toddler Mistakenly Calls 911, Dad Gets Busted For Grow Op!

A toddler, that was given a phone to play with, set off a chain of events last Friday that will effect his life for a long time to come.

The 11-month old mistakenly dialed 911 while typing away on a portable phone, which caused dispatchers to send police to the house when they couldn't get in touch with the family.

Once at the residence, police found no emergency, but just the boy and his dad watching a late-morning television program.

The trouble happened when they picked up a distinctive odour and quickly discovered 500 marijuana plants growing in the floor below.

Child-welfare officials took the child and placed him with his mother, who was separated from the father.

The mother told police she had no idea that marijuana plants were being grown in the home. She had dropped off the boy at his father's place earlier that morning on her way to work.

Study: Women Are Better At Spotting A Cute Baby Than Men

Psychologists at St Andrews University discovered that women could determine a pretty baby instinctively by its chubby cheeks, big round eyes and button nose.

They used computer image manipulation to discover how subtle variations in attractiveness were picked up differently by the sexes.

It is believed that cuteness sensitivity is affected by female reproductive hormones.

The research team chose 10 images from a pool over over 100 baby photos and combined them into a composite of a typically attractive baby face.

They found that women aged 19-26 and 45-51 were more sensitive to differences in infant cuteness than men aged 19-26 and 53-60.

However, women aged 53-60 performed at the same level as the men when determining the attractiveness of the newborns.

Dr Reiner Sprengelmeyer explained:

"Because average age at menopause is 51 years in the UK, these findings suggest the possible involvement of reproductive hormones in cuteness sensitivity."

I personally think that women are just more in tuned to the cuteness factor because they are the one having the babies. Men only really notice how cute their own kids are...
