Laila Ali Reveals She's Expecting Baby #2!

Exciting news for the Conway family! Laila Ali and her husband Curtis Conway are expecting baby #2!
"I am pregnant again! I'm three months, and I'm so excited, my family is excited," said a beaming Ali via a video on People.com. "I'm hoping it's a girl this time!"
Laila tells the magazine that her father, boxing legend Muhammad Ali, is excited about becoming a grandfather again.
"My dad is an excellent grandfather," she says. "He loves kids. He loves to kiss them to death."

A former world-class boxer herself, Ali admits it's a challenge to maintain an exercise regime during pregnancy.
"I've noticed I'm putting on weight faster this time, I started showing sooner," she says. "Staying fit is a challenge, even if you are a former world-class athlete such as myself, because you just don't have the energy that you used to have. Also, I have to hold myself back because I want to work harder than I'm able to."
When it comes to nutrition,
"Pregnancy isn't 'I can eat whatever I want,' because you have to remember you're going to be stuck with a lot of that weight afterwards that you need to try to get off. So I don't recommend 'grubbing,'" she says, admitting she succumbs to the occasional pregnancy craving.
"I have cravings all the time, even when I'm not pregnant," Ali says. "I made a strawberry shortcake last night." And? "It was great."
Due in early April 2011, the new baby will join the couple's son Curtis Jr., who is 2.

LeapFrog To Offer Rebates To Parents Who 'E-Cycle' Their Older Systems

Today, LeapFrog Enterprises announced its "Trade Up to Leapster Explorer" program, offering discounts on the Leapster Explorer system. To participate, families simply turn in eligible older LeapFrog platforms through RecycleBank's online service or in person at Best Buy stores, then receive $10 off a new Leapster Explorer system and $10 off two Leapster Explorer games. And by "trading up," LeapFrog consumers will be happy to know that their device has been "e-cycled" properly, which helps keeps landfills free from electronics.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generated more than two million tons of electronic waste in 2007, but only 18% of this was recycled—the rest wound up in landfills. And while 23 states have passed legislation mandating statewide electronics recycling, many people are still unaware that electronics can be recycled, or do not have access to a program facilitating collection.

LeapFrog will offer two easy ways for consumers to help the environment while enjoying a great deal on a top-notch learning system for their kids: from home, or in store.

Consumers can recycle their older LeapFrog platform by mail, by visiting the RecycleBank LeapFrog partner page (www.recyclebank.com/leapfrog). Consumers who want instant rewards can visit their local Best Buy store's Customer Service desk and turn in their LeapFrog system to receive savings on the spot.

Infant Deaths Prompt CPSC, FDA Warning on Infant Sleep Positioners

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today warned consumers to stop using infant sleep positioners. Over the past 13 years, CPSC and the FDA have received 12 reports of infants between the ages of 1 month and 4 months who died when they suffocated in sleep positioners or became trapped and suffocated between a sleep positioner and the side of a crib or bassinet.

Most of the infants suffocated after rolling from a side to stomach position. In addition to the reported deaths, CPSC has received dozens of reports of infants who were placed on their backs or sides in sleep positioners, only to be found later in potentially hazardous positions within or next to the sleep positioners.

"The deaths and dangerous situations resulting from the use of infant sleep positioners are a serious concern to CPSC," said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. "We urge parents and caregivers to take our warning seriously and stop using these sleep positioners, so that children can have a safer sleep."

The two main types of infant sleep positioners are flat mats with side bolsters or inclined (wedge) mats with side bolsters.

Both types of sleep positioners typically claim to help keep infants on their backs and reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The FDA has never cleared an infant sleep positioner to prevent or reduce the risk of SIDS. In addition, CPSC and the FDA are unaware of any scientific studies demonstrating that infant positioners prevent SIDS or are proven to prevent suffocation or other life-threatening harm.

"To date, there is no scientifically sound evidence that infant sleep positioners prevent SIDS," said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner and a pediatrician. "We want to make sure parents, health care professionals, and childcare providers understand the potential risk of suffocation and stop using infant sleep positioners."
Sleep positioners also typically claim to do one or all of the following: aid in food digestion to ease colic or the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD); and prevent flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly). In light of the new safety data, FDA believes any benefit from using these devices to ease GERD or prevent plagiocephaly is outweighed by the risk of suffocation.

CPSC and the FDA are warning parents and child care providers to:

  • STOP using sleep positioners. Using a positioner to hold an infant on his or her back or side for sleep is dangerous and unnecessary.
  • NEVER put pillows, infant sleep positioners, comforters, or quilts under a baby or in a crib.
  • ALWAYS place an infant on his or her back at night and during nap time. To reduce the risk of SIDS, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing infants to sleep on their backs and not their sides.

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not support the use of any sleep positioner to prevent SIDS.

Manufacturers of infant sleep positioners with medical claims that have not been reviewed by the FDA should stop marketing those products until they submit, and the FDA clears, appropriate premarket review submissions, including necessary safety and effectiveness data.

FDA has informed manufacturers of cleared devices of the agency's serious concern and has requested that they submit clinical data showing the benefits of their products outweigh the risk of suffocation or other serious harm.

Bryan and Jenny Masche Separate

Just a week after it was revealed that Bryan Masche was arrested for fighting with his wife and father-in-law, Jenny has filed for separation.

Bryan and Jenny Masche

According to E! News, the 'Raising Sextuplets' mom, filed for legal separation from her husband on Sept.17 - a day before the details of Bryan's arrest hit the news.

The couple’s six-year marriage imploded after a fight on Sept. 11th at the Arizona home of Jenny's parents, Sue and Robert Simbric, which resulted in his arrest. According to reports the disagreement escalated when Bryan discovered Jenny planned to go to the Phoenix area to meet friends, while he wanted to drive the couple's six kids – Savannah, Bailey, Grant, Cole, Molli and Blake – more than 200 miles to Lake Havasu.

Reports say that Jenny didn't know if Bryan planned to return with the children. The Police tried several times to get Bryan handcuffed, but the reality star, "was hesitant and refused" and almost needed to be tasered. He was then taken to the Yavapai County Detention Center where he was booked and released on bond.

Jenny's mom Sue told Radaronline.com
“We’re very, very sad, about the split. Other than that I cannot comment on my daughter’s marriage.”
A spokesperson for We TV said:
“Out of respect for the Masche family and their privacy during this time we are not going to comment.”
Radaronline reports that Jenny is requesting to live separate and apart, as part of her court bid to grant an order of legal separation. She is seeking both sole legal custody and primary physical custody of the kids with reasonable visitation for Bryan.

In addition, Jenny is asking for child support but is requesting an order from the court determining that neither party pay spousal support to the other.

She is also asking for equitable division of certain joint, community and other property and debt and that each party pay for their own attorney fees.

By way of Arizona law, both Jennifer and Bryan must attend and complete a Parent Education Program. Failure to do so may result in Contempt of Court.

Doctors Keep 14oz Baby In Sandwich Bag To Keep Her Alive

Everyday, all around the world, doctors are doing everything they can to keep extremely premature babies alive. The treatment of these babies has often been called experimental because they are so fetal, it sometimes takes unconventional methods to help them thrive.

To increase tiny Lexi Lacey's chances of survival, UK doctors placed the baby girl in a sandwich bag.  Because she was so small, it was the best way to help her maintain her temperature.

When parents Chelsea Rowberry and Lee Lacey, were told that Lexi was most premature baby born at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, they were warned that it was unlikely that she would survive.

Arriving at 26 weeks, Lexi weighed just 14 ounces. But to everyone's surprise this little fighter has shown everyone that she has bigger plans. During her 11 weeks in the NICU the tiny baby has battled against all the odds and pulled through.

Chelsea was at her brother’s home when she started having contractions on Sunday, June 27.
“It was frightening. I rang the maternity suite and they just told me to go to sleep,” she said.
Fearing she could be having a miscarriage, she called her mother, who called an ambulance.

When they got to the hospital, Miss Rowberry was told that she was already three centimetres dilated and she gave birth to Lexi who weighed just 14 ounces.

Lexi has now been given the all clear, but the couple says they still get scared because she is still so small, weighing just 5lbs 6oz.

Seventeen-year-old Chelsea, said some people were still wary about enquiring about the baby, fearing that she had not survived.
“People look quite shocked when I tell them she’s OK, a lot of people didn’t like to speak to me at first,” she said. “But when they see her now people don’t believe me when I tell them how premature she was.”
Natalie Weston, founder of the support group Calling All Little Miracles (CALM) based at the Lavendar Children's Centre in Warndon, Worcester, said:
"It is very rare for a baby that young to survive, but every year the survival rate for premature babies is getting better because of the research being carried out.
"The knowledge and technology is becoming more advanced and the basic thing is that babies are getting more help to survive."
We wish this family well. Even though Lexi is out of the woods medically, she will more than likely need a lot of therapy to help her meet her developmental milestones. Babies born this premature often need help well into their pre-school years.

Sesame Street Pulls Controversial Katy Perry duet with Elmo
After a week of controversy Sesame Street has pulled the scheduled duet between popstar Kay Perry and the show's furry star - Elmo.
In anticipation of their 41st season Sesame Street released teaser clips featuring stars like Jude Law, Will.i.am, Colin Farrell, and Run-DMC's Reverend Run. One of the shorts, however, got a lot more attention than the rest: a two-and-a-half minute video of pop star Katy Perry singing a reworked version of her 2008 hit "Hot N Cold" with Elmo. Parents who saw the clip though Katy's outfit wasn't appropriate for a show geared toward children ages one to six.

Sesame Workshop, the company that produces the show, responded to the controversy this morning by announcing that producers have decided to pull the song from the broadcast version of the program. The clip will remain online at KatyPerry.com, however, so the singer's more mature fans can watch it.

In a statement the company said,
"'Sesame Street' has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or caregiver. We also value our viewers' opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video, which was released on YouTube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of 'Sesame Street,' which is aimed at preschoolers."
The song, which was used is a children friendly version of Hot n Cold. In the video Katy appears in a busty yellow dress that does, in my opinion, show more than it should for a kids show.

Here is the video:
