Kid Tested: Moon Dough Barn

As the Summer wears on, I am constantly looking for new ideas to keep my guys entertained.  Enter Spin Master's Moon Dough!  It arrived last week for my kids to try out and it as been a hit since I opened the box.

This 'dough' is unbelievably light, almost like cotton with a constarchy consistency that sits between a marshmallow and old fashioned play dough. Parents will love that it never dries out, is hypo-allergenic and is wheat-free.

The newest set in the Moon Dough collection is a bright red Barn($20). At first I wasn't sure if there would be enough to keep both kids occupied, but as soon as I opened the bags of dough and let them loose there was more than enough for both to do.

This set took me out of my comfort zone as I traditionally buy toys that don't make a lot of mess and that can be cleaned up quickly. This is not the case with Moon Dough - especially when you have two rough and tumble boys. There will be a mess, but your kids WILL have fun.

My boys loved this farm. It has a cool four part mould in the barn that spits out perfectly shaped animals for play around the farm. This was my oldest son's favourite part and it never got old. Her would fill it up, release the lever and wait for his animal to come out, each time saying, "Look mom it's a Sheep!" or a horse or a chicken or a pig.  Some would come out without feet or heads because he didn't put in enough dough be he didn't care. It was magic and as he made them he lined them all up so that they could all graze in the field together.

My youngest spent most of his time filling the other moulds to make hay bales and fences to keep the animals in and help organize the livestock coming out of the barn. Oddly enough they didn't fight once because they were both so focused on the task at hand.

When it was time for lunch they didn't want to put the set away and made me keep their 'animals' on the counter for play later.

Because the dough does tend to break apart, this set would be perfect for outside on the deck or when grandma is here. And even though I had to get the vacuum out to clean all of the little bits up I will probably get the Pizza shop($15) or Puppy Dog house($15) for them at Christmas because they loved the barn so much.

Apparently my kids aren't alone.  This barn was already named as a top toy for this upcoming Holiday season by The Entertainer and I won't be surprised it makes a few other lists in the coming months.

Emily Procter Shows Off Her Bump At Emmys Event

Emily Procter was photographed stopping by the GBK and Tic Tac Gift Lounge on Friday.

This is the first time we have seen the mom-to-be since she announced she is expecting.  The CSI Miami star looked great in a bump hugging navy dress.

The new season of the popular show will start on October 4th.  Look for the producers to hide her growing belly with props as it won't be written into the script.

This is the first child for Emily and boyfriend Paul Bryan.  He/she is expected to arrive in December.

Featured Review: Valco Joey Seat

Valco has just released a new and improved toddler seat for it's strollers called the Joey seat. Versions are available for all strollers that take a seat- one for the 3 singles and one for the double. The Joey provides some long awaited improvements on the older model. First and foremost is the seatback height. Instead of the short back that offered nowhere for your child’s head to rest if they fell asleep, the new seatback has been increased to offer a much taller height. It’s still not the same as a full stroller seat, but it’s very well sized for an additional seat for your part time rider. The amount of leg room beneath the seat has been increased as well, as the seat sits much higher on longer legs. This is very nice for the main seat rider who really gets much more room to move around.

I tested the Joey seat on the Quad. The Quad is a fairly compact stroller that has a much smaller footprint than other 3 wheelers. I was a bit concerned that this might make the stroller feel a bit tippy with the tall seat on this more upright stroller, but it was absolutely not a problem. I tried the seat with my 20 pound 8 month old and my 25 pound 23 month old. We went for a very long ride over some pretty bumpy terrain, popped over curbs and even over sidewalks that inclined to the side and the stroller felt perfectly stable. No matter where I went the Quad felt secure with absolutely no tipping. Both children had a turn sitting in the front in the Joey seat and both loved it. My 23 month old didn’t want to go home and loved riding up front. It was just as easy to push with two on board as it was with just my daughter.

Pushing the Quad with the Joey seat was so easy and so much fun for them that we walked much further than I had intended. The seat fit both well and the back of the seat extended above my daughter’s head. The straps adjusted down well enough for her and had plenty of room for her tall 23 month old brother. The straps seem much longer than those on the original model, but that might just be more room created by the taller seatback. With the 45 pound weight limit and more room in the harness, you could use the seat for quite awhile. We have the original seat on our Twin Trimode and my very large 40 pound 3 year old started filling the seat beyond capacity just after he turned two. I had him give the Joey a try as well and he fit just fine. It’s probably not likely that he’ll be riding up there very often, but it is nice to know that he can if needed.

The Joey seat is a great improvement on an already great option for when you need an extra spot for your older child. The seat is easy to put on and take off and you can even fold the stroller with the seat in place. It’s a bit thicker fold, but not by much really. And it’s so convenient to have the option. With 4 children, we love that we can use our Quad as a single or add an extra seat and have a spots everyone on the rare occasions when all 4 need to ride. The Single retails for $80.00 and the Joey for the Twin retails for $100.00. As with the previous model there is an optional canopy. The canopy is also new, so you cannot reuse your old canopy. There is a different canopy for the Single Joey and the twin, but both retail for $40.00. Rain covers are not ready yet, but are expected in mid-October. You can also use the Joey Seat with the Valco Hitchhiker board in place and take three (or 4 on the Twin) along for the ride.

If you’re looking for an option that allows your toddler a spot to ride when needed, this is a terrific choice. Available for the Quad, Matrix, Tri-Mode EX and a second version for the Twin Trimode EX, this offers you such great flexibility and improved comfort and space for your children. If you have three children, especially if you have twins and a toddler, the combination of the Twin Trimode EX with the Joey seat, gives you something that is hard to find anywhere else, 3 seats in the space of a double.

Two Doctors Suspended For Fighting While Delivering A Mom's Baby

Two Italian doctors have been suspended after they began throwing punches in the delivery room of an Italian clinic, with the mother and infant in serious condition following complications.

According to an Italian News Agency, the fight broke out as a woman was about to give birth in the Messina Polyclinic in Sicily.

The husband told police that during the heated exchange of words one of the doctors grabbed his colleague by the neck and shoved him into a wall.

This was followed by the other doctor punching a window, which shattered, injuring his hand.

The laboring woman suffered a hemorrhage during the birth and needed to have her uterus removed. The infant suffered two cardiac arrests which caused cerebral damage and was moved into the intensive care unit.

While the clinic said there was no link between the fight and the birth complications, it is very sad that this family has had to deal with this and all of the issues from the birth.  They should have their licences taken away.

The baby, who is due in November, will be a surprise for Rachel and husband Alex Bourne.  She recently said

St. Louis Couple Welcomes Quintuplets

Apparently 5 is the new 2 because for the third time this month a U.S. couple has welcomed a set of quintuplets!

After a long struggle with infertility, Beth and Jim Glass of south St. Louis are now the parents of five tiny babies.

As with most couples who have had mega-multiples, The Glass' were shocked to find out that 5 embryos had taken. At six weeks, doctors said they thought she was pregnant with twins, but when they listened again at seven weeks heard not two - but five.

Beth was put on bedrest in early June to ensure a successful pregnancy and was induced today after getting to 33 weeks.

According to the hospital, the babies and mom are doing well.

In Birth order, here are their weights:
  • Abigale Elizabeth - 3 pounds, 4 ounces
  • Luke Mitchel - 3 pounds, 1 ounce
  • Evan Michael - 3 pounds
  • Brady Quinn - 3 pounds, 12 ounces
  • Sydney Elise - 3 pounds, 2 ounces

Featured Review: The Go Sling from Puj

The Go Sling from Puj is an excellent carrier for busy families that are always out and about. This very simple pouch sling is so easy to use that you can put it on one handed while holding your baby. You can just throw it in your bag and pop it out when you need a spot for your baby and free hands. No need to put your baby down, sort out your carrier and then place the baby inside. There are no straps or buckles to adjust and you don’t have to line up any seams. No tails to drag or folding to be done. It’s ready to go whenever and wherever you are. You just toss it over your head and around your baby. That’s it. Did I mention yet how pretty it is?

The Go sling is available in 5 styles. Each one is a combination of two very pretty fabrics. The smaller two sided piece of fabric marks the top. Once on it will turn down over your shoulder to pull the baby in towards your chest. You’ll only need to adjust the fabric securely under your baby’s bottom and behind your baby’s knees and back to give a proper and safe seat. That’s all you need to know to work the Go Sling(detailed safety instructions are provided on the website and with the sling). The fabrics them selves are gorgeous and very stylish. You’ll love to wear them. You might even want more than one. I absolutely would love at least two more. It folds up so small that you can tuck it in anywhere and always have it ready to pull out. Added plusses, it’s machine washable and available in a very wide array of sizes for an exact fit.

I use the Go Sling with my daughter who is now 8 months old and 20 pounds and it’s quite comfortable. It took me a few tries to get it on correctly (because I’m really bad at directions, no matter how simple they are), but once I realized that I was basically trying to do it backwards, it all fell into place and now it’s a snap. I can easily pop it on 1 handed while holding my daughter. Once inside she doesn’t feel heavy at all as it nicely distributes her weight across my back. I also love the 2 patterns on my Florence sling. The body of the sling is one of my favorite Amy Butler patterns, so I love to wear it. My daughter always seems quite happy and comfortable in it as well. Another great plus is that the price ($48) is relatively low for such a convenient attractive carrier.

The Puj Go sling is a stylish, simple and convenient carrier that will be a welcome addition to your diaper bag or stroller basket. You’ll love how it looks and you’ll love how easy it is to put on, anywhere, anytime, no matter where you need to go.

RECALL: 18,500 Magnetic Maze Boards Due to Choking, Intestinal and Aspiration Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Lakeshore Learning Materials, today announced a voluntary recall of about 18,500 Magnetic maze boards because the plastic wand can separate and expose a magnet that can be a choking hazard to children. Also, if a child has more than one of these toys and the magnets detach and are swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.

Lakeshore has received ten reports of wands separating and magnets detaching. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves wooden magnetic maze boards. The wooden boards have a clear plastic sheet that covers small wooden or plastic pieces located inside a maze. A plastic wand containing a magnet in its tip is attached to the board by a cord. The wand is used to move items inside the maze. The top of the board reads: “Who’s Hiding in the Garden?,” “Who’s Hiding in the Ocean?,” “Magnetic Counting Maze,” “Magnetic Alphabet Board” or “My Community Magnetic Board.”

Consumers should immediately take this toy away from children and contact Lakeshore at (800) 428-4414 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s website at www.lakeshorelearning.com to receive a free replacement product.

Mom Cuddles Tiny Baby 'Back To Life'

An Australian mom who was told her baby had passed brought her baby back to life by doing skin to skin with him.

When Jamie and Emily Ogg arrived on March 25 at 27 weeks gestation Doctors gave little Jamie Ogg no chance of survival even though he weighed just over 2 lbs.

His twin sister Emily had survived but Jamie was declared dead by the doctor who delivered him after 20 minutes battling to get him to breathe.

He was handed to his mother Kate so she and her partner David could grieve and say her goodbyes.

The new mom placed him on her chest and after two hours of being spoken to, touched cuddled and held by his mum he began showing signs of life.

Kate spoke about the night to an Australian talk show yesterday saying,

'He wasn't moving at all and we just started talking to him. We told him what his name was and that he had a sister.

'We told him the things we wanted to do with him throughout his life.'

Jamie occasionally gasped for air, which doctors said was a reflex action.

She added: 'After just five minutes I felt him move as if he were startled, then he started gasping more and more regularly.

'I thought, "Oh my God, what's going on?" A short time later he opened his eyes. It was a miracle.
'I told my mum, who was there, that he was still alive. Then he held out his hand and grabbed my finger.

'He opened his eyes and moved his head from side to side.' 'I gave Jamie some breast milk on my finger, he took it and started regular breathing.

'At that point the doctor came back. He got a stethoscope, listened to Jamie's chest and just kept shaking his head.

'He said, "I don't believe it, I don't believe it".'
Kangaroo care, which is what the mom did, is one of the most significant ways to bond with a premature baby.  The warmth of the moms body paired with the soothing sounds of her heartbeat have been know to reduce anxiety, regulate breathing and help babies grow faster.  In this case Kate's body acted link an incubator to keep the baby warm, which stabilized his heart rate and helped him to breathe.

Now the tiny baby is home from the hospital and doing well. The doctor who looked after the baby refused to be interviewed by the TV show.

Featured Review: Mamas and Papas Sola Stroller

Brand new to our shores, Mamas & Papas have been popular in Britain for 30 years. These practical and stylish strollers with exceptionally well thought out details are worth a look. My first experience with one of their stroller, the Sola, has left me very impressed. The Sola is an exceedingly cute reversible seat stroller and it’s been a pleasure to have it for a visit.

Assembly

There’s very little to do really, pop on the wheels and canopy and you’re ready to go. The Sola includes the chassis, seat and a rain cover and retails for $399.99 at Babies R Us.

Features

The Sola has many really great features. The most obvious is its appearance. I tested the Grass Sola and it’s beautiful. The exterior is all business, with a nice sleek modern chassis and a svelte looking black seat and canopy, perfect for a stylish mommy or daddy. The interior is all fun, perfect for baby and super cute. The bright Grass Green seat with the adorable multi colored retro tree design details is a welcome departure from a plain stroller seat. It’s happy, fun and everything a seat for a baby should be. This stroller will make everyone happy. The seat itself has an incredibly easy one handed recline and lays flat with an adjustable footrest. The seat also reverses very easily, just pop it on and off, nothing complicated to deal with anywhere. The handlebar is long with a pivot adjustability and you will not have to worry about ever kicking the axel. There is also an optional carry cot that is suitable for nighttime sleeping, which is great if you have a baby who will only sleep in a buggy. The stroller is also car seat compatible and adapters are available for Graco and Maxi Cosi. Other great features are the 4 wheel suspension, removable bumper bar and viewing panel in the hood. There is also a nicely sized basket and a very easy to use toe brake that I could easily do barefooted. Optional accessories include the carry cot, car seat adapters and coordinating parasol, diaper bag and footmuff (very nice as well). This is a stroller that will really take you far, with all of its great features and options and a rating of newborn to 50 pounds, you can absolutely make this your only stroller.

In Use

The stroller is just as great to use as it is to look at. It’s so functional and you really can use it from birth and up. My 5 year old insisted on climbing right in as soon as he saw it because he just loved the way it looked. He is quite tall and over 45 pounds. His head was just touching the canopy and he said the seat felt very comfy. In fact, he liked it so much I pretty much had to force him out of it after a quick ride. Because of the adjustability of the straps the Sola also fit my 8 month old daughter perfectly. Some strollers with higher weight limits and seats that will hold a bigger child have harnesses that just don’t adjust down small enough for a baby, but this one does. The seat back is nicely tall and the adjustable footrest is great. I sat all 4 of my children in the stroller and they all fit well, 8 months, 22 months, 3 and 5 years. There aren’t that many strollers that we’ve tried that fit all four so well. The stroller is so easy to adapt to each of them, it was a pleasure to use. The recline mechanism is one of the easiest I have tried and it is truly one handed, both down and up. You just squeeze the release and move the seat forward and back. I could easily adjust it while rolling along, which is really handy. It also offers a full range of positions, from upright to completely flat, so perfectly adaptable for infants and older children, looking around and naps. The optional footmuff and the full recline would be great for a newborn as an option to the carry cot if you don’t want to make the additional purchase. However, Three of my children would only sleep in stroller a carry cot for the first two months or so, so having one was always more than worth it for us. The canopy is generously sized and the peekaboo insert is really nice when the seat is forward facing, so you can still see your passenger. If you want your baby to face you it is really easy to reverse the seat in an instant. Nothing to fiddle with, just pop off, turn and pop back on. I really love a reversible seat and it’s even better when it’s easy to reverse. It’s so great when they’re little and if you have a rather unsocial toddler, like my 22 month old, it’s nice for them to not have to face the world.

For our first test ride, I took the Sola out around our neighborhood for a very long walk. We have a wide variety of terrain here, from broken sidewalks to tiny shops, so it’s always a good test. Despite the fact that the tires are not air filled, it rolled very nicely over everything. It of course won’t pop a curb on its own, but it’s light enough that it’s really easy to go up and down. The maneuverability is superb. It zipped and darted around everything in front of us, rolled through narrow spaces and tight corners with ease. The Sola is just as easy to push one handed as it is with two, no matter which child I had in it. In fact, it was so easy to push that when I traded strollers with my husband to see what he thought, I quickly asked for it back. He, however, insisted on using it a bit longer. The fold is also really easy and it’s fairly light at 22 pounds, so quite easy to move around. It’s great for in the car or for storing at home.

The Sola is an incredible stroller. My only regret, really, is that Mamas & Papas strollers were not not available here in the US sooner. It offers a really comfortable ride for both passenger and parent and is so nice to look at that you with both be very pleased as well. I loved pushing it and I loved looking at it. There aren’t many strollers that really make me happy just by looking at them, but the Sola does. I love the sleek modern styling mixed with the gorgeous green seat. The patterned trim and canopy liner just makes me smile. And even better, the features and option make me smile too. The range from newborn to 50 pounds, super seat, easy recline and reversibility makes the Sola irresistible. - Kiersten, Staff Writer
