All Boy Surprise for UK Teacher

Christine Jones, the head teacher of Bassetts Farm School, was surprised when the students that arrived for the first day of school in her mixed primary school were 20 BOYS.

The school draws its pupils from across Exmouth - population 35,000 - making the odds of an all-boy class even more remarkable.

The odds of an all-boy class based on pure probability would be a million to one though factors like parental choice of school and selection criteria complicate the calculation.

But Mrs Jones was amazed when the male-only class showed up on January 7th, saying: "A million to one chance - it's like winning the lottery.

"We celebrate our 30th anniversary this year and, quite honestly, it is the first time the foundation class has not had any girls.

"It is a record for us and probably unusual among other schools."

The school has 320 pupils made up of an even number of boys and girls although some of the classes attended by older children have more boys than girls on the register.

Improper Dosing of Cough Medicine Sends 7,000 Children to ER Each Year

The FDA had been issuing very strong warnings lately about administering cough medicine to toddlers under 2.

Today some official numbers were released that are very scary.

In their first estimate, the U.S. government believes that cough and cold medicines send about 7,000 children to hospital emergency rooms each year.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that bout two-thirds of the cases were children who took the medicines unsupervised. However, about one-quarter involved cases in which parents gave the proper dosage and an allergic reaction or some other problem developed.

About two-thirds of the cases were children who took the medicines unsupervised. However, about one-quarter involved cases in which parents gave the proper dosage and an allergic reaction or some other problem developed.

Because it is believed that an estimated 1,600 of the 7,100 children are under 2, the FDA's new recommendations, if followed, will hopefully reduce such ER visits by 23 percent.

The most common symptoms reported were allergic reactions like hives and itching and neurological symptoms like drowsiness and unresponsiveness.

CDC researchers said that most of the medicines involved were liquid combinations of cough and cold treatments.

Pregnant Woman Charged With Drunk Driving

I hate reading about stuff like this...some people just don't get it.

A 19-year-old Te Puke woman has been charged with drunken driving, after blowing a reading of 750. That is five times the legal limit for her age, which is 150.

The woman, who is six months pregnant, did not have a licence and was carrying three passengers when police stopped her.

She told police she was driving because she believed she was the least drunk of the four, and wanted to get back to Te Puke. She will appear in court next month.

Charlotte Church Out For A Walk

New mom Charlotte Church was seen taking four-month-old Ruby Megan for a walk near her house.

Charlotte pushes the uber expensive Silver Cross Balmoral, which is popular with royalty and costs almost $2500.

She has stalled on an offer to film the third series of her TV chat show, telling producers that she doesn't want her new baby "brought up by nannies".

The media has been hard on her because she is still holding onto some of her baby weight. I love that she actually looks like the majority of new moms in the world.

It isn't normal to loose all of your baby weight in 3 weeks.

Keep up the good work Charlotte. Be a mom first and then the rest will fall in place.

Couple Arrested for Quintuplet Scam

About a month ago a South Carolina website covered a story about a couple that was expecting quintuplets.

They had some quirky story about meeting online, finding love and then finding out they were expecting septuplets. The woman then went on to say that she had lost two of the babies and was now only expecting quintuplets.

The photo in the story showed the couple standing outside their double wide with their arms around each other. They were appealing to the public to help them buy some supplies for the new bunch, even listing their personal phone number at the end of the article.

I went back and forth about covering the story and then decided to let it go because there was something off about it. It seemed weird, almost desperate to me that the couple had listed their personal phone number.

Now I know why...It was all a lie!!

Nancy Cantu and her boyfriend Juan Solis were arrested by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office at their home around 7:30pm Monday. The Sheriff's Office has been investigating the couple after their claim of having the quintuplets gained large amounts of media and community attention.

It was through this investigation that authorities say they discovered the couple's claims were false.

The couple was asking for money and other donations for their expectant children. Deputies say they received anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 in gifts and money and could face up to five years in prison if convicted for this felony charge.

In related news, the Missouri mother that claimed she was having sextuplets has been sentenced to 4 years in jail for failing to pay restitution and missed several probation violation hearings. This crazy woman got as far as faking the actual births of the babies.

You know there's a screw loose here. You can't fake having a birth that is usually attended by 50 medical professionals!!!

Product Review: Symmetry Sleep System

Reviewed by Cari

As a mother of a new baby girl and a three-year-old son who suffered from Positional Plagiocephaly (Flat Head Syndrome) as an infant, I was very interested in the Symmetry Sleep System as a tool to help prevent this condition.

As most parents know, siblings can be very different. My son spent hours on his back and was very resistant to “tummy time”. My daughter, on the other hand, prefers sleeping on her tummy and shows no real preference for turning her head to one side or the other. In fact, she spits up significantly whenever she is placed to sleep on her back and does not sleep soundly. As such, she really isn’t at high risk for Flat Head Syndrome, but the Symmetry Sleep System offered me a great tool for giving her more time on her back.

My first impression of the Symmetry Sleep System was the moulded foam design and breathable fabric. Because my daughter spits up so much I was worried that it would be stained and smelly after the first night. The fabric, however, is very breathable and was easy to wipe and dry. Even more impressive, my daughter didn’t spit up at all by the second time I put her to sleep on it, I assume, due to the positioning that prevents her from lying flat on her back.

The sleep positioner is soft to the touch but sturdy enough that the baby doesn’t sink into it, which was one concern I had when reflecting on all the articles I had read about not putting pillows or soft blankets in a baby’s crib. Baby’s face is never close enough to the positioner for it to be a worry. It positions the baby so that her head turns slightly towards one side or the other, relieving pressure on the skull that occurs when baby favours one position while sleeping.

The “Mom-Friendly Caliper” included with the Symmetry Sleep System is a tool that moms can use to see if their child is at risk for Positional Plagiocephaly. Despite the fact that it looks a little like a medieval torture device, it is surprisingly user-friendly and not intrusive or uncomfortable for baby at all.

Overall, I am very impressed with the Symmetry Sleep System and will continue to use it with my daughter as a tool to get her sleeping more regularly on her back with less spitting up. I definitely wish I would have had access to the sleep positioner when my son was born. It would have been a good investment that may have prevented hours of physiotherapy and doctor’s appointments to correct his Plagiocephaly. This is a great product, especially in light of the current “Back to Sleep” movement in infant sleep health and safety.

For more information on flat head syndrome please visit Dr. Plagio's site or the basic comfort site to see more of the Symmetry Sleep System.

Jessica Alba Shows Off Her Bump in NYC

Expectant mom Jessica Alba shows off her growing belly last night at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC.

"Being pregnant is kind of like a sedative... everything's just chill."

"The heartburn, the hiccups. I wake up to hiccups every single morning. Never had hiccups before," she said.

But the changes aren't just physiological, they're also emotional.

"Anything could make me incredibly angry or break down crying. That's not something I'm used to. It's quite a blessing and perfect timing," she said, possibly referring to the writers strike," she said.

OBGYN's Urged To Warn Pregnant Moms About Cytomegalovirus

This news is worrisome...Pregnant women take note:

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging obstetricians and gynecologists to counsel women who are pregnant or may become pregnant to take hygiene steps to guard against becoming infected with cytomegalovirus, or CMV.

Contact with the saliva or urine of preschool-age children is a leading cause of this viral infection among pregnant women, the CDC says.
Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is caused when an infected mother passes the virus to her fetus through the placenta, during childbirth or while breast feeding.

Babies who have been affected by the virus will not show any signs until after birth, although some of these infants can develop hearing, vision, neurologic, and developmental problems over time. In some cases, there are symptoms at birth, which can include premature delivery, being small for gestational age, jaundice, enlarged liver and spleen, microcephaly (small head), seizures, rash, and feeding difficulties. These infants are also at high risk for developing hearing, vision, neurologic, and developmental problems.

Hand washing is the key and NO kisses: It is recommended that pregnant women wash hands often with soap and water, especially after contact with saliva or diapers from young children, to not kiss children under age 6 on the mouth or cheek to avoid saliva, and to not share food, drinks or utensils with young children.

How will a parent know if a child has the virus? The affected child will have 'mono-like' symptoms including a fever that lasts for several day, unusual or extreme tiredness, muscle aches, headache.

Audrey Reed-Granger, Whirlpool Corp spokeswoman says more than half of American households have at least two refrigerators. "This could become the fun fridge No. 2 in the garage or the basement or the game room. The time was right to bring it to the U.S. marketplace. It was a hole waiting to be filled."

The Jot will come in white in the standard freezer-on-top size, will cost $499 and will be available at major and independent appliance retailers.

It also will come with two Crayola dry-erase markers in black and blue.

"Let people have fun with it. Tell the kids it's OK to write on the fridge."

Mother's Amazing Sacrifice Saves Son's Life

Four months into her pregnancy, Lorraine Allard doctors informed her that she was in the advanced stages of cancer.

At that time she was advised to have end her pregnancy and start chemotherapy immediately.

She insisted on waiting longer in order to give her unborn baby a better chance telling her husband Martyn, "If I am going to die, my baby is going to live."

At 25 weeks gestation she went into preterm labour and delivered her miracle son, Liam, on November 18th, 2007. Doctors started treatment immediately after the birth, but it was too late.

Lorraine passed away just weeks after her sons arrival and only got to hold him a few times during their short time together.

Liam, who was born weighing 1lb 11oz, is expected to be strong enough to go home in March. He will join his 3 big sisters Leah, 10, Amy, 8, and Courtney, 20 months.

Babies born at 25 weeks have a 50 per cent chance of survival.

This goes down to 39 per cent at 24 weeks and 17 per cent - or a one in six chance - at 23 weeks.

Earl and Countess Of Wessex' Newborn Allergy Scare

The Daily Mail is reporting that Earl and Countess of Wessex had a bit of a scare last night after they needed to bring their newborn son to the hospital for tests to diagnose an allergic reaction.

Five-week old baby James was taken to Great Ormond Street Hospital on Thursday by the Countess and was kept in overnight, for further testing the following morning.

According to family friends, doctors confirmed yesterday that he had had a minor allergic reaction.

They did not reveal what may have caused it but indicated that the condition was treatable.

"As any new parent will tell you, the first few weeks of a new baby's life are real maelstrom so they were not taking any chances," a source said.

"The good news is that it is nothing too serious. The doctors are happy with the tests."

It sounds like he had a reaction to undigested dairy in his mother's breast milk. It causes an irritation in the colon. Undigested lactose fermented by bacteria in the colon creates lactic acid and other fatty acids, sometimes causing blood in the stool.

Product Review: Wordsies Wear For Expectant Moms and Kids

After I had my son, I was amazed at the number of people who would just walk up to me at the mall and touch his hands or face.

Most people don't realize that a newborn is more susceptible to getting colds or viruses than a toddler or pre-schooler.

Wordsies, a company created by a mom of 3, has created a full line of shirts that will let the world know what’s acceptable to you without them having to “insult” anyone!

The company's founder writes:

As a mother of three, I’ve endured complete strangers approach my babies and grab their hands or kiss their cheeks. I would think - Um, where did they just have their hands and lips? From those experiences, I’ve learned to say, “Please do not touch my baby – just look at him.” Now, parents can let the words on the shirts express their wishes.

Some of the unique phrases include:

  • Look But Don't Touch
  • Wash Your Hands First
  • My Lips Are For My Mommy
  • Please Don't Kiss My Lips
  • If You Can Read This Than Your Too Close
  • Don't Cha Wish Your Baby Was Cute Like Me
  • Please Don't Compare Me To Your Baby
  • I'm A Biracial Cutie

We have the longs sleeved version that reads 'Got Clean Hands?' and it is perfect. It is made of 100% cotton and manufactured in the United States. The neckline is cross over style to provide extra comfort for babies of all sizes.

I love that I can put the shirt on my son and know that it gets the point across. We are smart hand washers and think that everyone else should be too, especially if they want to hold our little man.

They baby on the left is pictured in a onesie ($20) They are offered in 3-6 month and 6-12 month sizes(both long and short sleeves) T-Shirts ($18) are offered in 12-18 month and 18-24 month sizes.

Wordsies offers original screen-printed designs, as well as carefully crafted embroidery designs. All embroidered designs have a protective barrier to protect your baby’s delicate skin.

If you are expecting a baby, this company also has a variety of Mommy slogan shirts as well.

*Feel Good Factor: A portion of Wordsies profits is donated to SIDS research as because the founder of the company has been personally affected by SIDS. www.sids.org*

How Do You Store Your Breastmilk?

For moms who choose to express their breast milk and store it for future use, there are many different ways to keep your milk safe and organized.

There are just about a million companies producing everything from a bag with a ziplock on it to bottles that go from freezer to baby's mouth.

Here are some options I was able to find:

While my son was in the NICU, the hospital provided me with 60ml and 90ml sterile bottles to put my milk in. They were extremely useful because when thawed they had just the right amount for my little man when he came home. They stack up nicely on each other and are compact enough to be put in your ice box. You can buy them at a medical supply store or sweet talk the receptionist at your doctors office.

Similar to the sterile bottle described above, Medela makes a 80ml cylinder for freezing breast milk.

The bottles, which retail for $13, are re-usable, washable and convenient. They are BPA free, come in a pack of 12 and are able to be connected directly to any Medela pump.

These fresh baby food & breast milk storage trays do double duty storing your milk or homemade baby food. Each tray holds 12 - 1 ounce cubes and is dishwasher safe.

While this tray is a great idea, I don't think it will hold enough milk for moms who are able to get 4 or 5 ounces a pump. priced at $14 for 2(not sure )

The Playtex One-Step Breast Milk Storage Kit allows moms to pump, store and feed in one liner.

The set includes 4 liner rings, 4 sealing disks, 4 nipple rings, 1 pump adapter and 10 Playtex 4 oz Drop-Ins soft bottle liners.

While this set is nice because of the price ($11)and storage amount, it is only convenient for moms who are using the Playtex 'drop in' bottles. Moms choosing to use another system will have to transfer the milk to your own bottles after thawing.

The Avent Breast Milk Storage Containers connect directly to your Avent pump allowing moms to express directly into the container and freezer with little fuss. Each kit includes four 4-oz storage containers, silicone sealing discs and screw rings (nipples not included).

I REALLY want Avent to introduce a BPA free bottle. This kit would be perfect if it was constructed with baby safe plastics. Priced at $12.

The Avent VIA Breast Milk Storage cups are a no frills way to store your milk. They are compatible with many pumps and can also be used as a bottle. The set includes ten - 6 ounce containers, 10 matching lids and 2 pump adapters.

You can clean and re-use the cups up to three times or simply throw them away (I hope they're recyclable).

Bonus - some moms say that these cup are also good for storing purees. Priced at ($15)

Mother's Milkmate Storage System comes with a rack that uses a "first-in, first-out" system to help you organize your breast milk storage and avoid over-storing milk.

The bottles are able to be connected to Medela, Ameda and Nurture III breast pumps.

The set comes with Refrigerator or freezer storage rack, ten 4-oz bottles, caps, sealing plugs and Freezer grade, removable white dating labels. Priced at $25

Storage Bags - Many companies like Medela, Gerber and Ameda make storage bags. The bags are pretty simple and straight forward. They are not connectible to any bottles or pumps and usually hold 6 ounces.

While these bags may look like the most reasonably priced option, moms who are looking at pumping longterm may want to invest in a product that is re-usable.

Breast milk Storage Rules:

  • Breast milk can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours.
  • Breast milk can be stored in a freezer for up to one month or a deep freezer for 3 to 6 months.
  • Remember to label the pump date and time on the storage container.
  • Thaw frozen breast milk under warm running water or in the refrigerator.
  • Do not let it stand at room temperature to thaw, and do not heat your milk on the stove or in a microwave.
  • Use thawed milk within 24 hours, and never refreeze milk.
